“Excellent budget accommodation in the middle of the National Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

It is a little bit off the beaten track, a long country road, 20 - 30 mins from the next dual carriageway, brings you to Simonburn. If you want to see Roman forts and Hadrian's wall, that's not too far, however.

Once you get there, you discover that the way was well worth it... It's incredibly beautiful and quiet in the Simonburn Teahouse and there is plenty of nature all around. I was delighted to notice that I don't even have mobile reception, a great place to get away from it all!

There are pubs in the adjacent villages, but not in Simonburn iteslf.

The hotel itself has a stunning setting: nice clean garden, with tables for outdoor meals, a warm and welcoming dining / breakfast room and parking in the back. The rooms were extraordinary clean, most of them were freshly painted, but the smell of paint was long gone. The beds must've also been very new: very comfortable with plenty of pillows. The old windows in the rooms overlooked the garden and really added to the charm of this place.

As we didn't order dinner, I can't say much about it. It looked and smelled great though.
English breakfast was cooked to perfection, with fresh eggs from the nearby farms. Most of the breakfast had very much an 'organic' taste to it and I assume it was all sourced locally.

The hotel also has a small shop, selling home-made cakes and local specialities. We bought orange marmalade, which was great.

I was disappointed to have only spend one night in this chraming B&B and would definitely come again, should the opportunity arise!

“Disappointing!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2010

While walking Hadrian's Wall, I stayed at this BnB with two of my family members. Although the hostess, Ann, seemed a pleasant woman, this was the worst BnB experience I've had in the UK. We got a very poor night's sleep because the refridgerated case in the shop was just below our room. This made an incredible noise all night, non-stop. Ann's male partner provided us with breakfast - I really couldn't say served. We walked into the breakfast room and he came in for a second and told us to 'help ourselves to cereal'. He immediately disappeared leaving us wondering if this was all there was for breakfast. There was no tea, coffee or jam, etc. anywhere in the room. The lack of information was disconcerting and made us uncomfortable. He returned after a time and asked "what do you want to drink". He was already out the door before I had time to complete a couple of words - "orange juice". We expected to be offered tea or coffee but none was offered and he certainly didn't leave us much time to ask for it before he disappeared. We had to ask for tea when he reappeared with a cooked breakfast - the large teapot presumably enough for three people had exactly three teacups worth of tea. Even in the smallest cafe, you get two cups of tea per person out of a pot. The breakfast was passable but not very good. We came with some expectations because we read that the BnBs in this area pride themselves on a nice breakfast. It was not the case at Simonburn. He gave us fried eggs with the yolks cooked hard, burnt bacon, toast with butter but no jam, mushrooms and slightly burnt sausage. This selection just appeared without preamble; We didn't know it was coming and he had never even enquired how we wanted our eggs. He did take the time however to make a poorly veiled insulting comment about my brother-in-law's lisp. We just ate what was put before us and left.

“A comfortable and relaxing place to stay with a warm welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2010

This was the second time I have stayed at the Simonburn Bed & Breakfast - always a great place to stay, with comfortable accommodation, a very warm welcome and a great breakfast!

The rooms are decorated to a high standard and the facilities are good - always clean and well presented. The cost is reasonable having stayed in several B&Bs in and around the area over the last few years.

I would definitely recommend this B&B as a good place to stay - it is very peaceful and the little village/hamlet is a great place to get away from the bustle of city life.

“Lovely place and host/hostess”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2009

This B & B was in the quaint, off-the-beaten track village of Simonburn. An attraction there is a large, ancient church. The owners were lovely, very hospitable. We were traveling with a one-year-old, and had a large, beautiful and recently remodeled room with plenty of space for the three of us. There are ducks, a rabbit, a lovely Highland terrier, and doves on the property which children enjoy. Breakfast was very nice, and in addition to the B & B there is also a quaint gift shop with locally made items, a "general store," and tea-room open during the day. Lovely place to stay!
