“Christmas at the Heifer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

My husband and I were married on the 23rd December and chose to have Christmas at the Hiefer as the start of our "mini-moon". We stayed for two nights (Christmas Day and Boxing Day) in the "Night at the Movies" room. When we first arrived we were given a very friendly welcome and shown to our room, the staff assisted with our bags. First impressions of the room were excellent, although slightly smaller than it looks on the internet, the room was funky, clean, warm and had an excellent bathroom. The 3D TV and choice of DVDs were a lovely touch and we were shown how to use everything in detail. The bath, big enough for two, filled very quickly and we had an array of Molton Brown toiletries to choose from (although these were not replenished for our 2nd night),
We really enjoyed our Christmas dinner in the restaurant. The choice was good and the portions, huge. The staff were very attentive, even though it was busy, and there was a really nice atmosphere. We moved into the Whiskey Lounge for a after-dinner drink and it was cosy and comfortable. We were provided with a residents buffet in the evening which they brought to our room.
The next day was just as enjoyable. Breakfast was the best out of all the hotels we stayed in on our mini-moon and, again, the staff were really pleasant. The next evening we ate in the hotel again, this time choosing the famous fish and chips. Delicious but massive portions!
All in all we had an excellent time and we will return one day. It is expensive but for a treat it is worth the money.

Room Tip: Night at the movies has an excellent bathroom

“Absolutely Outstanding”

My wife and I totally enjoyed our 1st, of what will be many, stays at the Heifer. From the minute we arrived, the staff were attentive to our every needs. When you arrive they take you straight to your room where you fill in a check-in card at your leisure (excellent idea). The room we had (A Night at the Movies) was just as it's advertised . Very tastefully decorated with the use of a large 3D TV. The bed was also very comfortable and even though its situated near the main village road, the thick curtains help keep the noise levels down and we both had 2 good nights of sleep.

The main hotel is very quaint with a warm log fire to greet you whilst you relax with a local beer or drink of your choice. We had a chance to chat with one of the owners and mentioned our trip was a treat from friends for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. When we went to dine in the evening, the owner had arranged for a gift to be at our table when we arrive. A great touch which was very appreciated.

An now to the best bit. The food. The seafood, which is bought in daily, was outstanding. Scallops, oysters, lobster, seabass... all mouthwatering and all exceptionally tasty and accompanied by a good selection of wines. We just about had room to try the tasting selection of deserts for 2.

Whilst not cheap, I believe this was very much value for money and my wife and I will use this place again and again for special occasions.

Well done Lewis and staff. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Room Tip: I can definately recommend the Night at the Movies room. We will be seeking to book the Champagne ro...

“Another fantastic stay at The Heifer”

We were booked into the Chocolate Room, but after a problem with the 3d TV were swiftly offered the Wensleydale Suite aka the 'Wallace and Grommit room' where we stayed a couple of years ago. This room has a separate seating area and tv/dvd player with tea, coffee etc provided and some scrumptious home made shortbread. The view is towards Leyburn. The huge bed is very comfy. The bathroom has bath and overbath shower and the luxurious Molton Brown toiletries and the fluffiest towels in the Dales. Complementary bottle of Sherry provided in the suite was very well received.

Dinner in the restaurant was delicious dining from the residents menu - chicken liver parfait with port jelly and apple chutney for Mr J, Jack Daniels Prawn Cocktail for Mrs J. This was followed by Maple roasted lobster, scallop and tiger prawn salad with bacon and Pork Belly for Mr J (£7 supplement) and a portion of Record Breaking Fish and Chips posh peas and tartare sauce for Mrs J served on a newspaper plate- these were 'best fish and chips ever tasted'. A brief interlude punctuated by a glass or two of house white was concluded with dessert- 'Snickerbockerglory' and Creme Brulee. Our table was decorated with a heifer bear and anniversary balloon, thanks to a collaboration by our friends and the staff.

Breakfast was just the job for our start to a day in the Dales - smoked haddock and perfectly poached eggs for Mr J and a West Witton full English for Mrs J (minus the black pudding), plenty of fruit, juices, cereal, tea, coffee and hot toast as well. Looking forward to planning our next visit to this gem in the Dales- should be on everyones 'Bucket List!'

Room Tip: Rooms are themed, depends what you are looking for, the new rooms are in the annexe so quieter

Thank you for your fantastic review, I have to say we were a little bit worried about the you having to move and we would all like to thank you for your understanding with this matter, I bought a brand new 3D tv for the room the next morning!. I will pass your kind regards to all the staff and we look forward to seeing you again in the future, Also may I pass on personal thanks for the whisky bottles, and the wee dram that was left in one, they will take pride and place throughout the Heifer.

“Totally Unique and Special”

Having stayed here five years ago, I was very much looking forward to a return visit, and it certainly exceeded my expectations. I was fortunate to be staying in one of the new luxurious rooms in the adjacent cottage. A "Night at the movies" fulfilled all I could have wished for, no expense had been spared. You will find a popcorn machine outside the room (gratis) together with an enormous selection of free movies. As you enter, be welcomed by Audrey Hepburn, beautifully painted, and wearing her finest jewellery above the bed. There are yummy homemade chocolate brownies and fresh fruit to be enjoyed, and a little extra touch of fresh milk in a small flask, to accompany the hot drinks is lovely, than you David, other Hotels take note! If you love a huge comfy bath this is the one for you, as you luxuriate, and observe the wonderful prints of Marilyn Monroe on the opposite wall. You really feel as if you are in Hollywood, with the special twinkling lights shining down, and the glistening star set into the floor.
After wrenching myself from this amazing room, I went down to the warm and cosy lounge, and secured a seat by the roaring log fire, enjoying the atmosphere together with the other guests as we all entered into conviviial and delightful conversation, as we all perused the menu before dinner.
The dining experience was sublime, with fresh fish and seafood being the stars. Just look at the Heifer's awards to see why, you don't need my input on this topic.
I have to mention the small minority of adverse reviews on trip advisor, which in my opinion are totally unfounded and damaging to a business that is going the extra mile, and then some.
For example- noise from traffic, this is in the country, and my room overlooked this road, I was not disturbed in the least by the light traffic. If you want total isolation stay on a farm! "People walking in the corridor", well this is a hotel, stay in a tent! And my absolute favourite- "Room for midgets" that really should be framed and put on the wall. My brother, who also stayed in the True Romantics room is six foot three, and we were shown the "Midgets" room, he had ample room to walk around, none of the ceilings were low in the hotel as far as we could see, so stay in a Cathedral!
It remains for me to say it is my great pleasure recommend this beautiful family run business,
and thank you all at the Heifer for your wonderful welcome and attentive service.
