This travelodge lodge has only recently been taken over by the company, previously it was an InnKeepers lodge so some parts have been updated recently.
On arrival it is very easy to find, in the dark on a busy road I was expecting problems but if you just look out for the sizzling pub sign of the Black Bull pub, its joined on to it. As you turn in, the pub can be a bit crowded but follow the road a hundred yards and there's a really big car park for the travelodge users that wasn't even half full (midweek).
When I reached check in I was seen to within seconds and was in my room probably a minute after getting out the car, I really appreciated that after a long day on a work related trip.
The room although booked as a single was massive! Clearly the extra space is for bringing in a sofa bed, cots or camp beds. It seemed such a waste of a room to have nothing in half of it but at least it created a bit of a sound buffer and it kept the draft from the window away from the bed (it was extremely windy that night though!)
The bathroom was very clean, with a big shower and loads of hot water. I did read reviews that the pressure is really bad, i've got long hair and rinsing it wasnt really a problem so I think most could cope. The storage is a little strange, looks like a built in cupboard that should have sliding doors on but doesnt, can look a bit messy but livable im sure!
I borrowed things from reception such as a hairdryer, there wasn't a wait they seemed to have enough to go around. I had hand soap in my bathroom, travelodges do not supply toiletries but i would think for hygiene reasons soap should always be supplied, some reviews say they didn't have any. If my room hadn't I would definately have gone to reception and say it needs supplying.
The bed was comfortable and actually a king size which was great for travelling alone and had extra pillows.
The only thing I noticed was that the carpets and curtains have been updated and very clean but the headboard and bedding was slightly older and the duvet cover had a hole in. I'd say I had the best nights sleep I'vd had of any business trip.
Apart from the odd update here and there I really cant fault it as a base for a short stay, its less than 5 minutes drive to the city walls yet benefited from less noise and plenty parking. I'd definately recommend for a budget stay for the price.
