“Incredibly comfortable, quiet and staffed by an incredibly friendly and hospitable team”

I was treated to a night away by my girlfriend who had planned the trip. I always know I'm in good hands when she plans a trip and the hotel only confirmed that. It's a beautiful building a short walk from York and brilliantly staffed.

Upon arriving, the concierge Josie (I'm so sorry if I've gotten that wrong) asked if we were here for an occasion. We told her it was my birthday and within a split second she had upgraded our room.

The room itself was immaculate with a four-post bed so comfortable you could drown in it.

The breakfast was generous and well cooked and the waitress for the day was very attentive. Was delighted to find the black pudding on the menu, that coupled with bacon and a perfectly poached egg, bliss.

Had a lovely stay there and would recommend it. I think I'll book my parents a night there for their anniversary.

“Beautiful hotel and excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I stayed here with my partner in February and despite the heavy snow, we had a lovely time! The staff were lovely and we were even upgraded. The hotel room is a very nice size with a tv, kettle and tea and coffee. The bathroom is large with a victorian style bath. There is a nice sized lounge next to the reception and a breakfast lounge. The breakfast was fantastic with a choice of cereals, toast, jams, and cooked breakfast. The waitress was great and we were really impressed with the service.
The hotel is a short walk from the Minister area. We managed to walk there in the snow and ice, so on a normal day, it would not be too far from all the shops and sights. I would stay again in this hotel.

“Comfortable and value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

York can be an expensive place to stay despite the large number of hotels. Marmadukes consistently offers good quality accommodation at sensible prices. Rooms can be a little small but these are pointed out on the website. An early breakfast was no trouble but they seem to have stopped serving food in the evening since my last stay. Around a 10 minute walk to York Minster and reasonable places to eat.

“Strange Little Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This hotel is located about 10 minutes walk from York Centre, so is in a pretty good location and just off one of the main roads into York - so it's pretty easy to find.

There's parking on the site which they charge out at £5 for 24 hours - although it's 'first come, first served' and it's quite tight.

The main hotel is very nice - a decent sized lounge, a bar area and a very nice bright breakfast/dining room area. It's got an intentional very 'old fashioned' feel about it.

The room I had was disappointingly small - you couldn't swing a cat in it (well, you could but you would bang it's head off all four walls). The bathroom was clean but only had a shower and I was kind of looking forward to a bath. However, the shower was excellent with plenty of power in it rather than the dribbly showers you get in some other older hotels.

There was a desk to work on in the room - but it was too small to really be of any practical use, so I gave up on that. The TV was small - but OK with plenty of freeview channels.

The best thing about the room was that the bed was very comfortable - I had a great night's sleep and it was nice and peaceful.

I didn't have dinner in the hotel - but I did have breakfast, which was excellent. The waitress serving was very pleasant and helpful as well.

In short, York can be quite expensive for hotels. If you're getting this for less than £60, then it's decent value as long as you're not planning on spending lots of time in the room. Much more character than a holiday inn express or a travelodge. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 out of 5 I would say.

“Great breakfast !”

Hotel was nice, room small although it was described as petite it was a struggle to store luggage. Bathroom was large with fantastic bath. Breakfast was great, serving staff friendly with good quality food. Sauna was out of order and despite having contact several times it was only when we asked about times for using it, we were informed it was out of order. It's a good 10 to 15 minute walk from the minster. If we went back to York we would probably stay closer to the centre it was a bit off putting after a long day to walk that distance when there are loads of similar places closer to the centre. But despite minor complaints it is a lovely hotel with great food , one of the best breakfats ever in a hotel.
