“Excellent location, great food, good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Excellent location, only 5-10 minutes walk from city centre. And after a long day browsing the shops and visiting the museums you can return to the comfort of the pub, for a drink or two and a meal. Great food, good service from helpful staff. Rooms are not huge but have all the things that you need. Only downside is having to come home. Worth booking

“Good for a short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

We stayed here as it offered one night bookings and was close to York centre. We couldn’t have been happier, the room was small (what do you expect for £65) but was clean and tidy and perfectly fine for our needs. We were attending a wedding so didn’t need to spend too long in the room, if you are staying for longer I would suggest trying to find somewhere a little larger. The welcome was very friendly. The car park is gated at night so the car was very secure and we got a key to a door in the gate so access wasn’t restricted. Would recommend for short stays in York where access on foot to the centre is needed and if you aren’t too concerned about the size of the room.

“Great pub with friendly locals and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

The pub is an old style pub clearly popular with the locals with a great atmosphere. T/he rooms were clean and a good size with usual tea coffee and hot choc. The food was really nice (Lamb shank mmmmm) Stayed here for a few night while working away and was a really nice place to go back to after a hard day.

“Appalling arrogance after extremely lengthy wait for food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

I have to agree with another reviewer who complains of being ignored and kept waiting. Myself and my Mother (aged 80) visited the pub at 6pm on Sun 11th Sept, we had tickets for a performance at the nearby Barbican theatre commencing 7.30pm. The pub was not busy and we ordered a Sunday roast and a Pie dish (both of which must have been already prepared), to cut a long story short, we waited an hour for our food, no-one came to apologise for the delay despite me asking twice as to what was happening, people who arrived after us were served first. When the food arrived it was too hot to eat in the very short time we had left. I do not normally complain but felt in this instance that I must say something- I was very reasonable and mellow in my complaint however the owner told me to "calm down and don't spoil my dinner" he offered no recompence whatsoever however he did give me another half shandy when I suggested he should. This man is rude and arrogant but has an adept and dangerous skill at being charm himself until one orders and pays. The quality of the food does not jusitify the wait, nor the price, for what is after all pub food, and far too much of it. Quality of service would be far preferable to more than anyone could possibly want to eat.
