If you want to stay in a old cosy inn this has to be it, open fires and gas lit wall lights add to the atmosphere thinking you have travelled back in time, can get a bit noisey at night so forget about getting some sleep before midnight.
Ideally located in the heart of York itself you cant go wrong, we will definately be returning.
we booked a four poster bedroom, but would say it wasnt worth the money, but would reccommend this place,

Lovely atmospheric pub right next to the Minster. No parking on site, however easy walk to car park about 5mins away. Great bar and good service - just remember it is a pub and there will be people in the bar until closing time and all will be well.

We had dinner in here the night of 27/1/12 and oh my god the chef must be some sort of wizard to produce food like we had.we have eaten in some fantastic restaurants all over the country and this is in my top 5.The prawn starter from the specials menue was the best starter I have ever had.such a great place.atmosphere was lovely and all the staff were great.will be back everytime I go to York.Book up if you are going for a night out it's well worth it.

What a wonderful old inn, gas lamps and all. An old tudor style building, nothing is parallel or perpendicular. My daughters squealed with delight as we ascended the narrow twisted staircase and declared I had booked us in to stay in the Shreaking Shack from Harry Potter.
There is a range of rooms available, we selected the Belfry at the very top because it fitted a family of four. Even more fun and character for the girls and even though the old beams were very low and I hit my head painfully many times, in the same spot, but it was still worth it.
The beds however were very uncomfortable.
The restaurant was closed on the Sunday night when we stay, which was very disappointing because the menu looked very good and was well reviewed. I'm not the biggest blackpudding fan but the one I had with my breakfast was fantastic and made in-house.
