“A good pitstop for one night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

I needed somewhere to change into a dinner jacket and then return for about 7 hours sleep before setting off to work a few miles away the next day, so I was there for little more than 12 hours. The bedroom was compact (small if you prefer) but everything worked, including a powerful shower in the en-suite, with good toiletries. Breakfast was excellent - a wide choice of cereals and fruit and beautifully cooked bacon and eggs. The proprietors were friendly and professional. I would not hesitate to stop there again if I need a one night pitstop in York. One tip - I booked through Hotels.com; it would have been cheaper to have booked direct.

“A little disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

We stayed for a weekend in November booking through the Visit York website. We specifically booked a room with a bath and even sent an E-mail saying that if this was not possible then we would like to book alternative accomodation. However when we arrived the owners said that they had no knowledge of this and said that the E-mail had not been passed onto them. They even told us that they had us down for a room with a bath but for some unknown reason they moved us to one without! We obviously realised that there was nothing we could do but accept the room we were given,it was nice enough but on the small side.We though tmaybe we would be offered a small discount because of the inconvenience but disappointingly we were not, although we were told that if we we returned we may be upgraded to the 4 poster room,we will probably take them up on that!
Despite this I would recommend St Mary's as it is in a great location, just a few minutes walk away from York Minster, city centre and the river.Breakfast is fantastic, great choice of cereals fresh fruit and juice, yoghurt etc...followed by an enormous full English. You had to be down by 9am though, which is typical of most of this type of place in this country,it all seems geared to the owners rather then their paying guests, something I've never understood.
There is a small car park at the rear of the hotel, which was full when we arrived, but the owner provided us with a pass to park around the corner which was fine.

“Mini Break in York”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

The food was excellent and the owners were friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable - except for the squeaky floorboards. It was in a very quiet area so there was no disturbance from anywhere.

The location is excellent for the north side of the city and close to the town and train station. It gave us the opportunity to see areas of York that we had yet to discover.

Room Tip: Room 8 is right at the top of the house so you need to be fit and sober!

“A lovely find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We stayed for 3 nights in October and had a wonderful visit to both 23 St Mary's and to York. Julie and Chris made us very welcome, gave us lots of information and cooked wonderful breakfasts. It's in a great situation and we walked through the lovely Museum Gardens or the Bootham Bar every day exploring. The free city walk is really good for first time visitors and includes walking on part of the city walls. There are very good pubs, Betty's for tea and if you like balsamic vinegar - a great shop to go to is The Hairy Fig. Looking forward to our next visit!

Room Tip: Number 8 on the top is quiet and spacious
