“Great value - stay here!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

This is a great little find and really good value. The owners were friendly, welcoming and the attention to detail was excellent. Clean, comfortable, nicely decorated, quiet and just 15 mins walk from the centre of York. No problem parking - the owners give you a voucher which allows free parking on the street. Delicious full English with a good selection of cereals, preserves, juices for breakfast. The room had a comfortable bed and a decent amount of tea/coffee making facilities as well as biscuits. Small en-suite but fully equipped with everything you need.Great value for money.

“Really nice place, lovely hosts and close to town”

Having read some of the 'Terrible' reviews on here, I'm struggling to imagine they're for the same place we stayed at.
We found the owners friendly, helpful and courteous. Breakfast was explained (you're required to place your order for breakfast by the previous evening, but nothing unusual about this!), and we were shown to our room, which was clean and comfortable.
Sure, in our particular room (which wasn't the one which happened to have the house's original bathroom en-suite), the en-suite was a little cramped, but it was clean and functional.
The double bed was spacious, spotlessly clean and very comfortable, offering a lovely, peaceful night's sleep. Yes, we happened to hear a couple coming in tipsy at 2.30am next door, but this can happen in any hotel, including the Ritz!
The English breakfast was hot and perfectly lovely.
You do need to part on the street about 100 yards away, but the guest house offers parking vouchers for free for the duration of your stay and the car was perfectly safe.
On top of this, the Dairy Guest house is a mere 15 minute walk from the centre of York and so is ideally situated.
Frankly, there's not really much more one can say: we found the Dairy to be really nice and well placed as a 3/4 star guest house. I'd have no problem in recommending it as a place to stay in York.

“Lovely friendly welcome and great breakfast - I loved it”

Great location for walking into York - took about 10 minutes to get to Jorvik Centre - and it was a scenic walk via the walls, over the river and past Clifford's Tower. I was given a free on-street parking pass for the duration of the stay so walked or bussed everywhere. My room was located through the flower-filled courtyards in a sort of annexe. Comfy bed, pretty quilt, nice touches like wine glasses and bottle opener provided. The breakfast was great and beautifully cooked to order - service with a smile and the toast was hot. No rush to push you out at all - very relaxing - a lovely family run place.

“Nice and hospitable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

My partner and I stayed in York for three days to see the historic sights - during our stay, our hosts Ken and Sue and their son did their uttermost to make us feel welcome and help us out with anything we needed and asked for.
Really nice to feel genuinely welcome and staying in such a "homely" atmosphere. The guesthouse is situated a 10 minute easy walk out of central York in a nice street with plenty of restaurants, shops, etc. Our room was nice, clean and quiet, and breakfast (buffet and cooked breakfast if you ask for it the night in advance) was very nice.

We only had a few minor points where we felt the guesthouse could do a little better - our bathroom was tiny, literally closet-sized. It would be difficult for a big/over-weight people to use the facilities, and it required significant physical force to open/shut the bathroom door.
Also, we found it a bit strange that towels were not exchanged during our stay and basic amenities (shampoo, etc.) were not replaced, when they were used up. Finally, the B&B says they have free wi-fi - they do, theoretically, but the signal in our room (#1), at least, was very weak, so it only worked from time to time for us.

I am sure that our hosts would have remedied all of this had we brought it up with them, but considering that we paid what equals the price of a standard stay in a three-star hotel in the UK, such issues should be sorted out as a matter of routine. But all in all, a very pleasant stay, and we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room facing away from the street when booking, as there's quite a lot of heavy...

“A great all round place to stay !”

Both my fiancee and I would like to start by saying a huge thank you to both Ken & Sue for making our first visit to York a very special one and making my birthday extra special !
Now to the review, The Dairy Guest House is a wonderful place to stay, with it`s 6 bedrooms we were in room number 1 looking over the small court yard at the back, it was a lovely laid out room with the most comfortable bed ever ! The shower was a little small, but did the job. The room was also kitted with tv/dvd , tea / coffee facilites , my only small issue with the room was that, what we thought was a connecting room, was in fact a door for a fitted waldrobe which was a bit narrow -
Breakfast you choose the night before and leave you menu on your table before 8pm - the breakfast choice doesnot change but still a good range to pick from - with ceral etc. to start with (help yourself) and then Ken cooks a mean full English to follow-
The b&b is located appx.10-15min slow walk into the centre of York and around 20mins from the railway station (we got a cab (5 mins) from the station and was under a fiver!).
We were both really impressed with Ken & Sue`s hospitality and would not put anybody off staying at the Dairy Guest House.
Just as a side note the b&b also has a good range of "Things to do leaflets" and we can recomend both the "Original Ghost Walk" and a meal at the "Waterfront Resturant" Amazingly both these venus are next door to each other and we only found the ghost walk meeting point (Kings Arms Pub) by chance as we stopped for dinner in the Waterfront !
Overall this was a much better way to stay in York rather than an overprice , over sized hotel.
