“Couldn't fault it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed at The Groves for three nights towards the end of January for a weekend stay in York.

We booked the hotel based mainly on some of the reviews that we had seen on here and were not disappointed. The price was also very reasonable I felt for what we got for our money.

The ample parking was a great to see on arrival and then we received a warm welcome as we entered the hotel and the check-in was very easy. The gentleman on reception carried one of our bags and showed us personally to the room making sure that everything was as we would have hoped. The trip was organised to celebrate my wife's birthday and so I had organised for some flowers and chocolate to be in the room for her through the hotel booking system. These were both much better than I had hoped for with a very full, colourful bunch through a local supplier and very nice chocolates.

The room was very nice and spacious with a large comfy bed, clean big bathroom, large TV and ample storage space for our clothes etc.

The hotel was only a ten minute walk straight into the town centre on the Minster side of the city which was excellent. We spent a lot of time walking around the city but knowing the hotel was close by was a bonus for us!

The breakfast was very good with fruit, cereal and juice available on a help yourself basis with a wide variety of hot options available to be freshly cooked. The service in the restaurant was very good and they were always happy to offer additional toast and fresh tea and coffee.

The hotel had a bar which stayed open until 11pm which was ideal for a nightcap as well.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel for a comfortable stay and as an ideal base from which to explore York and everything the city has to offer.

Room Tip: I would have thought that some of the rooms may have a view over the city to the east but unfortunat...

“Nicer than my house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Grand victorian entrance and stairs. Room was adequate in size (a normal double) well appointed with a large tv, modern bathroom etc. Staff were helpful, even rustling up caffeine free tea bags, and coping with my failed attempt to book through a booking web site. Breakfast was truly magnificent - try the continental with fresh fruit, yogurt and honey, croissant, excellent. Even the toast was perfectly done. About 15 minutes walk to the minster and town centre. Plenty of car parking.
Overall one of the best hotels I have found at this price anywhere in the UK. A good model for others to follow.

I stayed at this hotel for the weekend with my family as a surprise for my mums birthday. The staff were very helpful, the room was lovely and the location is only 10 mins walk into York. I cannot fault this hotel at all. I will certainly recommend and will definitely be staying there again.

“Perfect for a visit to the fabulous city of York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We booked our trip away to York at The Groves not really knowing what to expect. We found the place with no problem is about a 20 minute walk from the train station. When you arrive the first thing that tells you this is place is a little different is the huge wooden staircase that winds up the double height hallway. Gordon was there to greet us. A decent bloke for who nothing was too much bother We were shown where breakfast was served and that there was a bar open til 11pm. Then we were taken to our room which was very well appointed with a huge tv and the bathroom was very clean and spacious. We had a double room which had a single bed in it aswell. The bed was very comfortable and tea and coffee facilities were good with a decent amount of milk. Normally i find you typically only get enough milk for two cups of tea. Breakfast the following morning was stunning. You had the option of a continental with a fruit salad or various types of cooked breakfast washed down with all the Yorkshire tea you could drink. The food was very tasty and again nothing was too much trouble. We shall be coming back again in the summer loved the place. What a gem of a hotel.
