“Perfectly placed for Central York”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We have stayed at this Travelodge twice now, two nights in May 2009, and again one night in November 2011. Both occasions we had an excellent time. The hotel is situated within 5 minutes easy walk of the centre of York. There is virtually no car parking on site unless you are disabled, instead you park at secure car park about 5 mins walk away, for which you are given a discount voucher. None of this was a problem. The hotel is fairly new, and therefore clean and modern. Location of this hotel far outways any negatives anyone could throw at it. There is a Wetherspoons directly next door, for cheap breakfast/evening meal if you wish.
Would definately stay here again.

Room Tip: Didn't really have any problems room wise on either occasion.

“Fawlty Towers: totally chaotic but cheap”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Arrived at 4:30pm with wife and two tired children. Told we couldn't check in because our room wasn't ready!!! I asked when it would be ready: They didn't know! I said I'd wait while they found out how long we'd have to wait. The "manager" went upstairs to check...5 minutes passed...10 minutes passed...no sign of her. Eventually the receptionist left a queue of people waiting at the desk and ran upstairs to check himself. Our room was ready. The lazy cow of a manager hadn't bothered to come back down to tell us, and had left the young receptionist to deal with all the angry customers by himself.

Upstairs - the corridor was strewn with rubbish and dirty linen. One of the key cards didn't work. Wife wanted a cup of coffee - all the coffee mugs were dirty. Trip back down to reception for clean mugs. Still a queue of people down there either whose bookings were lost, or who had been given rooms that were already occupied. Young receptionist dealing with it all by himself again. Where was the "manager"? Still hiding?

The decor was tired and the mattress wasn't very comfortable - woke up with backache.

Next morning we checked out. I asked the receptionist (a young East European woman) if there was anywhere I could leave our suitcase while we went next door for breakfast. "No sorry." Right then. Thanks a bunch, love.

We booked the room as part of a promotion and only paid £15. But if I'd paid full price, I'd be hopping mad and asking for my money back.

The only thing that saved this place from getting one star is the friendly, efficient young man on reception, doing his best to sort out all the booking mistakes, and problems with people's rooms. Whatever Travelodge are paying that guy, they should double it.

Room Tip: Try Hotel 53 across the road

“good location - shocking double glazing !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

stayed for 1 night early feb 2012, having stayed in a few travelodges round the country . if you are looking for a good central location to explore york you will struggle to find anything better for the cost. however if you are also hoping for a decent night's sleep you may be struggling. i have stayed in many city centre hotels ( including the new travelodge in birmingham bullring ) and this is easily the worst i have experienced. the road outside is a fairly busy one, but you dont expect every single car that goes past at 3 and 4 in the morning to wake you up ! we were on the 3rd floor ( god knows what its like lower down ) and it felt like the window was wide open ( it wasnt ! ) and that every car was going past my head about 5 feet away. dont know when the double glazing was last changed but travelodge seriously need to do something here. beyond that its an average travelodge, everything it provided you can find better and cheaper close by ( there is a decent wetherspoons literally 10 feet from the front door ). take earplugs if you intend staying here or drink yourself silly before going to bed !

“Good as a base but too tired for anything more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My boyfriend and I spent a night at the Travelodge York Central in January 2012 and found it to be suitable as a base from which to explore the city, but not great for anything more. The hotel is basic, but that's to be expected considering the cost. Often even in basic hotels though I find little extras, attention to detail, which make the stay that little bit more special. However, in this hotel it was the lack of attention to detail and the complete absence of anything special that left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The bedroom and bathroom were both spacious and the bed was comfortable enough for a night, which I why I consider it a good option for a place to rest your head when visiting York. On the downside though, the bathroom was not very clean, having a dusty floor with someone else's cotton wool balls on it, no shower curtain for an over-bath shower, and a radiator towel rack that had broken away from the wall at the top, meaning that it has to be disconnected for safety. We were provided with a kettle but limited to two teabags and a couple of milk pots, meaning that we could only have one cup of tea each, which I thought was a bit stingy. The view from the room was of the central courtyard/parking, so could have been worse but could have been better too, given the proximity of Clifford's Tower. One of the plus points of staying here is that you get discounted parking at the nearby Q-Park, which seems very secure, although you cannot leave and then return using the same ticket, which I think you might be able to do at the Travelodge York Central Micklegate. The location of the hotel is not bad either for a more budget hotel - just a short walk from the centre.

“abysmal”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

i thought the travelodge west end edinburgh was bad enough, but this one makes that one seem palatial.

for travelodge to charge £80 a night for this place is nothing short of scandalous.

i'll start with the (few) positives - the redeeming features are it's location, which is a 10 minute walk from the city centre, and the view of cliffords tower we had from our room.

everything else was awful. the bed was terrible and spongy soft, giving no support at all, the bathroom was covered with mildew (and travelodge you might want to get rid of those awful grey floors.) the state of the hotel corridors was also poor - filthy floors, flickering tube lights etc. the whole place felt really dirty and, for the most part, looked it to. we had a terrible night's sleep.

i would not recommend this place at all. travelodge, either get your act together and spruce up your hotel to an acceptable standard, or don't charge as much as you do. either way, i certainly won't be staying with your chain again.
