“Time travel, the Ghost and me!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We arrived on 30th of Jan 2012. As soon as you walk in, you are transported to another time, Ye Olde English setting. Uneven dark flooboards, dark wood tables, candles lit on the tables (even in the day). As our eyes adjusted we felt that we had come to somewhere really unique (in a good way). We were made welcome immediately by the bar staff and they offered us a small sample of the ales before we chose. The food was fantastic. My partner had the giant yorkshire pudding (understatement) filled with mash, gravy and enough thick roast beef to wedge every door open in each of their four bedrooms. We booked for the 'Dark Side Tour' which starts at the Golden Fleece every night. No spoofed up ghost stories..just the terrible truth of Yorks murderous and bloody past.. more terrifying. We stayed overnight in the Shambles room. The room looked tired and in need of a refurb..but it didnt matter one bit. If you are looking for Ghosts..we were both visited. We both felt breathing on our faces and the sensation that someone was leaning over us in bed 'checking up on us'. Highly recommended if you want to 'go with the experience'...

Room Tip: Ask the staff about your room before you book. There are only four and some have more 'ghost'...

Okay, my daughter (19) booked this for her & I in late Sept 2011. The location could not be better and the bar staff were very friendly. Ale superb. Landlady ever so nice and even gave us a pottery water jug with the Golden Fleece logo. Our room was clean, nice linens, the walls were stained, but whatever, I knew it was all about the history and location. The wonky floors made it quaint. The room was featured on Most Haunted. Wish I had seen it first, I would have paid more attention. The breakfast was delicious and I would recommend it for those not looking for perfection.

“Food at The Golden Fleece”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Whilst staying in York, my boyfriend and I were looking for somewhere to have our evening meal. We had heard of the Golden Fleece and thought we would pop in and give the food a try and see what the place was like. We went in at about 7pm and it was extremely busy. We found a table easily though and ordered our food and drinks. I thought that the prices might have been a bit steep with the commercial status the pub has achieved but I was pleasantly surprised when looking at the menu. I chose to eat scampi and chips which was £8.95 and my partner chose a cajun chicken burger and chips which was priced at £8.95 also. We waited probably 20 minutes for the food but there was a lot of information at the back of th emenu about the history of the pub, so we read that and also took the time to soak up the atmosphere. The food arrived and our mouths fell open at the portion sizes, you definitely get your moneys worth here! Amazing scampi and chips, really nicely presented on the plate too, and the other half enjoyed his burger too. Normally we have really large appetites but we couldnt even clear our plates! We were so impressed with the food. Really nice atmosphere to the place and such a lovely "old" feel too with slanted floors and slanting tables! I really enjoyed the food at The Golden Fleece. We have talked about looking into a room here and would definitely come back for food if I was in the area again.

“Don't get fleeced at The Golden Fleece”

2 friends and I stayed here several years ago (2005) The accomodation was very dirty... A large stain of suspicious nature on the bed cover and mold, dirt, soapscum in the shower in Catherine's room. It was bad enough that my friend spent the night in the extremely uncomfortable 'lounge' of the Minster Suite (which was where my other friend and I stayed, and was also dirty but not quite as bad ) and didn't use the room at all. On arrival we were finally 'welcomed' by a very surly and dour young lady. We were given no information about the bar opening times etc and were generally made to feel as welcome as a dose of plague! The only saving grace was that we did have a (very unexpected) ghostly experience. We left as early as possible and on checking out the staff were just as unpleasant as on checking in! York itself is beautiful and I'd recommend it to any visitor... Just don't waste your time or money at the Golden Fleece.
