“Hospitality - second to none!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

From the moment you arrive - even in the snow! nothing appears too much for Linda and Dave from parking the car to ensuring that you have everything you need for a pleasant stay including assisting us with our luggage. Great hospitality tray with mugs....yes.... rather than the typical small cup! Those little extras made it so much more comfortable and pleasant...bowl of sweets; tea towel; and even hair curling tongs and straightners and a bed that doesn't sink in the middle. Had great nights sleep; wonderful choice of breakfast; and hosts had sound knowledge of the area. Very close to the city centre but also local buses pass by the end of the street. Great place for a break any time of the year - would highly recommend!

“Linda & Dave extremely attentive, helpful & friendly”

My partner and I stayed at Mont-Clare GH on the 17th & 18th December for a Christmas & my birthday break. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, Linda and Dave greeted us and were more than happy to help with anything we needed. We booked the Super king size bedroom which was lovely and on the front of the building, and because the guest house is situated on a side street it was lovely and quiet, no outside noise at all. Infact it's ideally located being just a 5 minute walk into York centre via Gillygate and you're right at York Minster. Breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble. If I had to be really picky I would only say that the shower in our room was not very powerful and just 'trickled' but, all in all we had a lovely 2 night stay at Mont-Clare and York was just fabulous. I would highly recommend it to anyone and we will definitely be staying again.

“the friendliest guest house I have ever had the pleasure to stay at”

as a music photographer I travel around England often to photograph live concerts and as I was photographing a band in gillygate on the 16th December I was delighted to find this guest house which was in the ideal location for me.

upon arrival I was made to feel more than welcome as Linda met me at the door and lead me into the homely guest lounge which was decorated nicely for the festive period.
she and Dave talked me through the price, the keys and the breakfast as well as taking a great interest in the concert I was attending before Linda took me up to my room which she took a good 5 minutes to show me around.

as soon as I saw my room (which was room 4 on the top floor) I was more than impressed. I had a beautiful double bed with a dozen pillows, lamps with touch sensors, a radio alarm and many inviting little extras such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate, mineral water, soaps, shower gels and a bowl of boiled sweets. (which I must say I took much advantage of while winding down watching TV in bed after the concert)

the décor was also very beautiful and homely.

I had a very good sleep in my extremely comfortable double bed and despite the fact Claremont street is by a main road, I could not hear a single sound.

the next morning when I went downstairs for breakfast I got a warm welcome from Linda who asked me how my night had been before seating me on my table where I had a glass of orange juice waiting for me.

I started off with a bowl of cereal then was given a very delicious vegetarian breakfast, toast and a pot of tea. I was even asked if I would like some more toast after all of that!

after I had packed to leave I went downstairs and asked if I was able to leave my bags there until I was ready to leave so I could have a day in the city without carrying all my things around. they were more than happy to let me return for them at 4pm and Linda even gave me a plaster for the blister on my toe.

In other words I found my stay very comfortable. Linda and Dave are brilliant hosts who will do anything to help as best they can and I would recommend this perfect little guest house to anyone and everyone.

I often go to York for Concerts and stayed in various places in the city but now I have stayed at the Mont-Clare I will not consider staying anywhere else in York but there again!

“A bit of a gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

I stayed here for a couple of night on a bit of a nostalgia trip. My father used to bring me and my sister to York during school hols when we were tiny.
This is an excellent guest house that I would have no hesitation in recommending to single travellers, couples or families. It is brilliantly situated down a quiet street which is a five minute walk from the town centre. Parking cars can be a bit of a bind (so close to the centre) but the propietors will do there utmost to overcome this. I was given a very warm and friendly greeting from Linda and Dave Blackburn who are truly professional in their running of this establishment. I had a room a couple of flights up but Dave had carried my case up before I had even missed it. The room was spotlessly clean and I was stuck by their attention to detail. As a VERY light sleeper I am always a bit anxious about noise but I slept soundly here.
In the morning service was very quick in arriving at my table and it has to be said that Dave makes a first class Full English breakfast. The city walls are very close by and an early morning stroll on them before or after breakfast is a delight before the crowds arrive. Definately a good place to stay.

“A TRULY HONEST REVIEW OF THIS GUEST HOUSE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

May I start this review by stating that I am quite prepared to stand in the highest court in the land and swear on the Holy Bible that what is written is true.

And to Trip Advisor, please let this message go through in its entirety. Thank you.

My wife and I have just returned from another totally wonderful 5 day stay in this guest house. That was our third stay here this year, and, I think a total of 10 since Dave & Linda Blackburn opened their doors five years ago. Indeed we were amongst their very first guests. They opened on a Thursday, we arrived, for the first visit the next day.

In all of our stays we have been met with nothing less than total politeness and consideration.

Yes, we have now become good friends with David & Linda, if I may be allowed to call them that. So you may accuse us of being biased. Believe me, if anything were badly wrong I would inform you. Of course things go wrong. Bound too. Human error and all of that. The worst complant that I had this last stay was the packet of biscuits on the tray left in your room was a little difficult to open !! Now I bet some of you Trip Advisor people out there would make big issue with that !

Dave is always wiling to help with directions, Linda too. Dave conjures up a really mean full English breakfast. One moaning person earlier left a message stating it was inadequate. Well you get a choice of friut juice, cereals, choice of tea, coffee, toast, a fresh fruit salad, freash fruit and, finally, if you desire, a yoghurt ! Then their is the tray left in your room. Choice of tea, coffee - both regular and decaffinated, brown and white sugars, hot chocolate sachets. The tea, coffee and chocolate sachets are all branded products. Finally not forgetting the two bottles of water.

The rooms are small but totally adequate. Fresh towels daily.

The ambience is wonderful. That is worth a lot in itself. Their is free parking at the rear. That will save you £7 daily.

Now, may I please just refer to a recent feedback left on Trip Advisor regarding a negative ?

Yes, both Mr & Mrs Blackburn agree that they fell well short of their exemplatory high standards in dealing with this lady. They accept that fact. Linda's reply to this woman explain some difficulties they were having. My wife and I are privy to those, and, no, I am not telling. Just to say the reasons are valid. The woman really should have used her brain and fended far better for herself. A full apology has been issued to her and why, oh why if she was so angry wait six weeks before complaing !?

We do tend to criticise far too easily instead of seeking out those responsible and resolving the problem, which quite often is a very small one. Communicate and don't declare war !!

So again my wife and I without any bias very strongly recommend this guest house. And don't forget too, that it really is only a nice slow seven mimute walk to the Minster and the surrounding shops ! .

Room Tip: Any room. I do believe their is a four poster availabe !
