Wow! we had a lovely stay, we arrived early so the staff put our bags in storage which was just great.. It was our engagement weekend, we booked a double room and got a cottage in the grounds of the hotel, its was so nice i wanted to stay longer, we had a lovely big bed and there was also a single bed in the room, we had a table and chairs so when we got back from our day in the centre we relaxed with a drink befor going back out for our evening meal. The cottage was lovely and clean with a big bathroom and shower also good supply of coffee tea etc in cottage... The breakfast in the hotel was yummy, lots to choose from, we had a good feast that set us up for the day, the staff very friendly and helpful. The hotel is just a nice short walk into the center.. Perfect in every way we will be back again...

Booked a 3 night stay in twin room for myself and a friend at the Lady Anne Middleton hotel in York which is situated very conveniently to the town found the room very tired looking and dated with very mismatched furniture bathroom was okay. One of the problems was that there is no lift which I knew but expected there to be someone to help with the luggage as we had to struggle up 4 flights of stairs.

The main problem was the breakfast is buffet style but on the first morning we had to wait 30mins for more bacon to be put out and the toaster did'nt work very well. Another morning we asked for porridge it took 20mins to arrive and when it did was'nt cooked then the toaster burnt toast and packed up when it ended up in flames they found 2 more which also did'nt work we asked could they not put bread under grill the answer was we have'nt got one it was taken out a year ago. The last morning my friend ordered porridge again as we were told it was only a cold buffet because the hot trays were'nt keeping the food hot, after waiting 30mins the porridge arrived and was cold in the middle it was also so thick you could stand the spoon up in it.

Talking to other guests we were told breakfast used to be waitress service but things seem to be going downhill, needless to say we will not be staying there again.

My son's 40th birthday party in the attractivev, wood-beamed conservatory at Lady Anne's was an outstanding success, largely thanks to everyone working there. The event was a surprise for the main participant and involved over forty friends and members of our family, including nine children. We could not have asked for greater care and support than that offered by the assistant manager Andy, the head waiter Beppe, the events organiser Emma, and the rest of the staff working there that evening. We had easy access to the adjacent bar and lounge area, where the buffet was set out in due course. The latter was varied, tasty and readily accessible, and thus excellent in every way, including the range of choices available for vegetarians. The conservatory itself was set out beautifully, with some decorations left from Christmas at our request, plus balloons and disco supplied by outside people used to the hotel. Our one slight reservation was about the hotel's very old and slow computer, linked to its media projector, which took far too long to set up, especially since no-one on the staff seemed to have quite the requisite expertise. Once set up, however, it ran reasonably well, enabling us to show a collection of photos throughout the sit-down meal. With a noticeable lack of fuss, the staff then cleared away this set up, freeing up the dance floor for the later disco. In the past we had used the conservatory for lunches for parties of around thirty retired colleagues, but had stopped going because the quality of the food began to disappoint. No longer! We shall definitely be taking these parties back to Lady Anne's at the first opportunity and personally my wife and I now aim to sample more of the new restaurant menus prepared by the hotel's excellent chefs.

I choose this hotel primarily for price and location. In addition, the description of the hotel sounded just like the kind of place I like - it has a bit of history attached to it. The hotel is a group of several buildings behind a gate and a wall very close to the centre of York. In fact, it runs parallel to the River Ouse, and is just 5 minutes walk from the bridge closest to the centre of York. (The Living Room bar and restaurant is right on the bridge which was very handy for us!) Although the main hotel and bedrooms aren't in the old building I saw on the internet, it is nevertheless a very welcoming place. The reception, which is in the same barn-style room as the lounge and bar, was very warm and cosy-feeling. The bedroom, although quite basic, was very comfortable, with everything one needs in a hotel bedroom. Breakfast on the two mornings we stayed was really good - lots of choice, well cooked and served in a really convivial dining room. We had a sandwich one lunch time and drinks both before and after going out in to the town, and all were at very reasonable prices.

All in all then, I would recommend this hotel as a very acceptable variation on the generic chains that inhabit city centres, and would certainly return.
