“Distinctly average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Stayed 2 nights at end of Jan for friend's birthday. Check in was friendly, but room (number 101) was tired, small and cold. TV was ancient and had damaged front panel. Furniture was all worn. Towels were thin and frayed at the edges. I asked to change rooms and was shown the only other room available (106). Opted to stay in 101 as 106 was no better. Our friends ended up in 106 as their first room was just as small, had no king size bed and smelt strongly of damp. Unfortunately, 106 had a king size bed, but an unclean toilet and was cold. The cold was clearly a problem in these rooms as there were 2 plug in radiators in each. The main heating only blew out cool air and was noisy.

Reception dealt with the faulty hairdryer in our room and the iron with dodgy wiring in our friend's room without complaint. However, the checkout receptionist was less than sympathetic to our moan about the heating. Even had the nerve to tell me that the room was cold because the weather was cold.

I have stayed in many Marriott hotels around the country and this is by far the worst. These rooms were booked direct with Marriott online as a £100 b & b deal and were supposed to be deluxe. There was nothing deluxe about these rooms. What is more, I completed a Marriott customer service questionnaire the day after our departure and to date have not received any communication from anyone with the Marriott group. Other friends who only stayed for one night had much better rooms.

On a plus note, the public areas of the hotel seemed well kept and the staff were in general very nice. Breakfast on our first morning was a bit chaotic as there were lots of overseas students in the hotel, however, the food was fresh and hot as the turnover was quick. Breakfast on day 2 was more leisurely as the students had left, but the food wasn't as good. We didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel so can't comment on this, but would recommend the Fox and Roman across the road-nice atmosphere, good food and friendly staff.

All in all, we enjoyed our weekend in York and will come back, but will NOT be staying at the Marriott. Save your money and go to the Premier Inn.

Room Tip: Avoid the old section!

“Nothing wrong, but nothing outstanding”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I've stayed here a few times for various conferences, including during a referb'

Never had a bad stay, with friendly staff, clean rooms and good food.

However I wouldnt say that it was a 'very good' hote, but I think 'average' is a bit harsh - If I could I would award this 3.5 stars.

If was in York on my own (and not with collegues) I would stay somewhere a bit more central.

Room Tip: I've slept all over this hotel - never had a room that stod out, or that I need to change - only...

“winter midweek break”

We stayed at the marriott at the beginning of January. Our welcome from the reception staff was very warm and friendly, and they were all very helpful. We paid an extra £10 each for breakfast, and thought that was worth the money. The restaurant was very pleasant and overlooked York Racecourse, and the staff very friendly. It was very quiet during our visit, with only a handful of guests in when we had breakfast. Our room was very nice, with tea and coffee making facilities and decent biscuits! The swimming pool was small but was never crowded and we also enjoyed the sauna. The hotel is on the Tadcaster road and is very close to the bus stop, and buses run into the centre every ten minutes during the day and every thirty minutes in the evening. An all day ticket for £3.70 was a good buy. We visited all the usual tourist attractions and found the Castle Museum well worth a visit, but walked out of York Minister when we discovered they were charging £9 a person to look round.
We were treated to our 2 day stay by family members so don't know what price was paid, so can't comment on value for money, but it was a very nice hotel.

“really nice stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We had a lovely stay at the Marriott again. We were bumped up to a garden view room and a birthday card and chocolates were brought to the room. Very comfortable bed and great breakfast. It's a long walk into town, but its a really lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not overlooking the car park

“Reasonable, but could be better. Rip-off internet.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We stayed at the Marriott York for a couple of days, to have a family birthday lunch [ at the Fox and Roman nearby ]. Check-in was prompt and helpful for us, though other family members found it slow. The rooms were pleasant but a bit tired, CRT tv, average toiletries, but £15 daily charge for internet. WHAT A RIP-OFF! The cheapest chain offers it free these days, and this is about the most expensive I've seen for a long time, though many 'business' hotels like Hilton still seem to think that the can charge £10-12 since it'll be charged to the company.
The bar and restaurant prices seemed high for a mid-range out-of-London hotel, and wine similarly overpriced.
Rather strangely and annoyingly they seemed to have locked the outer electric doors open, so on a cold windy weekend, every time the inner doors opened a howling cold gale swept through most of the ground floor lobby and beyond.
