Stayed 2 nights at end of Jan for friend's birthday. Check in was friendly, but room (number 101) was tired, small and cold. TV was ancient and had damaged front panel. Furniture was all worn. Towels were thin and frayed at the edges. I asked to change rooms and was shown the only other room available (106). Opted to stay in 101 as 106 was no better. Our friends ended up in 106 as their first room was just as small, had no king size bed and smelt strongly of damp. Unfortunately, 106 had a king size bed, but an unclean toilet and was cold. The cold was clearly a problem in these rooms as there were 2 plug in radiators in each. The main heating only blew out cool air and was noisy.
Reception dealt with the faulty hairdryer in our room and the iron with dodgy wiring in our friend's room without complaint. However, the checkout receptionist was less than sympathetic to our moan about the heating. Even had the nerve to tell me that the room was cold because the weather was cold.
I have stayed in many Marriott hotels around the country and this is by far the worst. These rooms were booked direct with Marriott online as a £100 b & b deal and were supposed to be deluxe. There was nothing deluxe about these rooms. What is more, I completed a Marriott customer service questionnaire the day after our departure and to date have not received any communication from anyone with the Marriott group. Other friends who only stayed for one night had much better rooms.
On a plus note, the public areas of the hotel seemed well kept and the staff were in general very nice. Breakfast on our first morning was a bit chaotic as there were lots of overseas students in the hotel, however, the food was fresh and hot as the turnover was quick. Breakfast on day 2 was more leisurely as the students had left, but the food wasn't as good. We didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel so can't comment on this, but would recommend the Fox and Roman across the road-nice atmosphere, good food and friendly staff.
All in all, we enjoyed our weekend in York and will come back, but will NOT be staying at the Marriott. Save your money and go to the Premier Inn.
