I've stayed at the York Pavilion for two nights, first time at the start of February then again for another two nights the next week on business. I knew the building quite well, though never actually been in but being so close to where I needed to be during the day and such a bargain price it was ideal for me, but if you need to be in the centre, it's a taxi/bus job.
Firstly this in not a 3* building, it's beautiful inside, classically and tastefully decorated. What struck me first was how lovely and warm it was, which was due to the open fires in the dining room. It's very impressive and every staff member I passed greeted me warmly, they were all very professional.
The room I stayed in was a double on the first floor, called The Botanical room. It was very nicely decorated, with wood beams, a very comfortable bed, nice size flat screen TV and an amazing power shower that I could have stayed in all day! The room was absolutly spotless, I always notice how clean a room is by the carpets for some reason and these were thick, cream and had not a sinlge mark anywhere.
There was only one chair I noticed with a little table, for me it was no problem as I was travelling alone but seeing as though its a double, maybe it should have two.
The room was a touch cool, the radiator in the bathroom could be turned up which I did but the one in the room couldn't. It was probably due to the sash windows which are clearly quite old, I know I'd rather the old ones which were in keeping with the building over modern ones. Besides I find it much better for sleeping to be cool than too stuffy.
The wardrobe was the only problem in the room itself, and that was a very minor issue. I couldn't get both doors to shut and when they were pushed shut as far as they could go they made a really loud grinding noise which I was concious of annoying other people but that's the only thing in the room I can think of.
My main concern about this room is the noise from the corridor. I never heard another guest, the rooms are very quiet and can't hear talking or rooms next door at all. This particular room however is opposite a door with private written on with a keypad and a set of 5/6 steps to the right of the room door. The room is used by staff all through the night, particularly very early in the morning (i.e. 5am). The door can be heard shutting/opening and then the stairs creak like I've never heard stairs before! Almost making my bed shake. This happens an awful lot, I'm a light sleeper so woke up pretty much every time it happened. This is the only thing that was the downside to my stay and by chance on returning to the hotel the next week I was in the same room! Must be the room given when you have got a great deal!
Like I say the door and stairs are the only slight negative and if it had been so bad I could have asked to be changed on my second visit, but the room itself was perfect for my trip so I just stuck with it.
I would have no hesitations recommending this hotel to other people. Although I can't comment on food as I didn't eat in the hotel, the setting itself is ideal for a relaxing break, the large car park and excellent service made this a first choice should I need to return for business.
Room Tip: I was to the side of the building so away from the road traffic and had a ncie outlook, but room 56...
