Myself and husband stayed here in December on a Travelzoo deal. This hotel is not in York Centre itself and is situated on quite a busy road. We therefore spent quite alot in Taxis to and from the town centre and also be careful not to venture in rush hour as this can lead to more expense.
The hotel itself is lovely. We were upgraded to a superior room and this was based at the front of the hotel and was very spacious. The beds were uber comfortable. I had requested a DVD player before our stay and this was supplied at no extra cost. When we arrived at the room though it was freezing cold and we found out that the radiators had been switched off so this was not nice on a cold december day. Also the next day we were out and when we returned around 3.30pm the room was freezing again and when we called reception we were told that the heating would come on at 4pm. Again not good if you are staying in your room all day but fortunately we were not and the heating came on not long after we came back.
Dinner was included one night of our stay. However, one of our nights fell on a christmas party night and we were offered dinner either in their restaurant or at the party night. As it was my husbands birthday we plumped for the party night. However, we felt that the food was not that good and that it probably would have been better in the restaurant but we enjoyed the party atmosphere.
Breakfast - we had a full english and this was brought to us which was nice. However, on the first morning the waitress failed to inform us that the plates were burning hot to touch and my husband burnt himself so beware of this as the plates were burning hot on both mornings although we were told they were hot on the second morning. The orange juice was dire, like it had been watered down 20 times so i left it. I am an orange juice lover in the morning so i was very disappointed with this. You help yourself to toast and put it through a conveyer belt kind of thing. This was a nightmare as it was either underdone so you put it through again and then it was burnt. The restaurant manager was extremely helpful and he said that it was regulars changing the settings on it that leads to it burning. The manager did my toast himself and this was fine. Although the same thing happened the next morning, i felt like i was cursed!!!! You can choose whether to have breakfast in the bar or the dining room. We prefered the bar as it was a nice atmosphere with christmas music whereas there was deadly uncomfortable silence in the dining room!!
We had afternoon tea included in our deal and this was lovely. Cream scone with jam, a couple of other cakes and a pot of tea.
Overall we did enjoy our stay at the York Pavilion. Would we come again, probably not as it was too far from York Centre but it was well worth it on the deal that we got. We will stay in the centre next time.
