“Interesting building and good rooms.”

This is not a chain hotel. It is an individual hotel.

The rooms I used were both good, with good bathrooms.

Check in was easy. I had dinner there on one evening but it was not impressive.

Location is good. It is not central but it is an easy walk along the main road into the centre of the city.

It is an inexpensive hotel. It is not the best I have stayed in but the sleep quality was good, the staff were perfectly approachable in my opinion and there was wi fi. Breakfast was good, but choose between continental or cooked at booking in.

Recommendation ? Yes but it is not a "polished" hotel. The building is however an excellent place and well worth a visit for any building "spotters" !

“Grand old Lounge with open (gas) fire and wood panelling.”

Had a two night stay on business recently. The room was quite nice with a comfortable bed, modern Television and plenty of space. Breakfast was nicely presented with a good choice of Cooked and Continental.
Within fairly easy walking distance of the City too.
No wi-fi in the room.
The staff were helpful and friendly.

Would use again for sure.

“Nice Hotel shame about the Staff”

We stayed at the Hotel on New Years Eve 2011. The Hotel itself was lovely, really beautiful main hall and pleasant bedrooms.
Unfortunately, the staff are a different story, from the Receptionist, to the lady serving behind the bar, each person that I came into contact with seemed to be unfriendly and disinterested in the guests. Our plan was to have breakfast in the Hotel on New Years Day but after dealing with a few different members of staff and quickly realising that they obviously didn't get the meaning of customer service, we decided to give it a miss and drive into the city instead.
Not sure if I'd bother to stay again, there are far friendlier places in York.

“Spot on!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

Please read this, DO NOT believe the bad reviews of this Hotel. My Husband and I stayed here with two friends on New Years eve and I have to say what a beautiful Hotel, the decor was amazing in the entrance, lounge and the bar. We arrived at 3.30pm and were checked in promptly by a lovely girl who was very helpful, we stayed in the annex which is across the courtyard and the rooms were clean and well kept. The shower was nice and hot and the bathroom was clean. The room was a little chilly when we went in but the heater soon warmed it up. When we dropped our bags into the rooms, we hit the bar which was very reasonably priced. The staff were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. we headed off into the city centre after a few drinks and chat with the lady on the bar and had the best night. We came back to the hotel to see in the new year and asked if we could take our drinks into the lounge which was not a problem at all. There we mingled with some of the other guests who all said that they thought the Hotel was nice. They didnt even mind when we were playing the piano (well, trying to make up a tune). All in all we would recommend this Hotel as a great place to stay. Thank you to all of the staff.

“Avoid unless desperate!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

After reading other reviews we were a bit hesitant about going here but went with an open mind. Alas we should have heeded the reviews! The check in time on the booking invoice was stated as "after 2pm" but we had arrived about 1.15 so went see if it was possible to check in early (other hotels do sometimes allow an early check if the room is ready). We were "greeted" by an unwelcoming and unfriendly young receptionist who just said "check in is after 2. I suggest you go and wander round the time and come back later" Very friendly!!! We went off for the afternoon and returned around 5.30 to find a different receptionist on duty who was a bit more friendly but nothing particularly special. We were handed a key to our room - 238 - and went up to unpack-what a dump!!!. The room we had booked was a double and whilst there was a double bed in it, it only just fitted into the extremely small room which appeared to be half of what was oncea larger room that had been partitioned. There was no headboard for the bed. What little furniture was able to fit into the room was very shabby and the carpet was dirty and worn. There was a hole in the wall behind the door and the paintwork needed attention. The small en suite bathroom initially appeared to be of a slightly higher standard (shower cubicle only) but the shower turned out to be rubbish - there was hardly any water pressure.
Breakfast was no better. The dining room was staffed by 2 female and 1 male waiting staff. One of the females was very unwelcoming and unfriendly and gave the distinct impression that she would rather be anywhere else than where she was - when we asked for another pot of tea she grabbed the empty pot and rolled her eyes!! The "hot" buffet breakfast itself was of poor quality - cold fried eggs, cheap sausages, shriveled bacon.
We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and on the last night. to cap it all. there was a loud disco until gone midnight which did not allow for a restful nights sleep
Unless you are desperate for a bed for the night, heed the reviews and look elsewhere
