I arrived late but still received a friendly welcome from the receptionist. Things didn't bode well when I reached my room as the door number had clearly fallen off, a replacement cobbled together from various stick-on numbers which didn't match.
Once inside the room was fine, a typical Holiday Inn Express arrangement with a double bed and, in the corner, a sofa bed, plus a desk and a small en-suite with shower (no bath). The room looked a little tired, and on my visit this hotel hadn't been refurbished unlike the majority of other HIE branches I've stayed in, but it was still clean and comfortable.
Breakfast is a buffet, dealing mainly with cereal and toast which you make yourself in two (very slow) toasters. There are machines dispensing hot drinks and juices, and a small selection of hot items (sausages, scrambled eggs, beans, maybe more - I don't eat cooked breakfasts so I didn't look) is available, along with a few pieces of fruit and yoghurts. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, so if you want a meal in the evening you will end up at the (very nice) Toby Carvery next to the hotel, or getting in your car and travelling into York.
All in all this is a decent base for exploration or for a business trip, but don't expect the hotel to be in York - it is a few miles outside and surrounded by fields - and if you've stayed in a recently refurbished HIE you may be disappointed. It's fine for a few nights though.
