“Good base for York and surrounding area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here on a Tuesday and Wednesday night in Jan 2012. Staff very friendly, room a bit on the small side, but still very comfortable. Lots of free extras that other hotels often charge for, such as daily newspaper from reception, complimentary hot drinks all day long in the lobby etc.
Breakfast in the morning is self service, with a small range of cereals, toast, fruit, sausages, egg beans etc. Very good, considering that it is included in the room rate.

Parking in York city centre is very expensive, so the nearby park and ride, at £2.40 return per adult is a good option.

Overall, had a very pleasant stay here, and would recommend it to others looking for an "economy" break to York... it ain't the Ritz, but it's very good value for the price.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel away from the main entrance are probably quieter at weekends.

“Clean, friendly, close to York centre”

We stayed here on a Saturday night.

The hotel is easy to find from the main motorway routes, and is close to York centre (about 2.5 miles - cost around £5 in a taxi). On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and efficient and we were checked in a matter of minutes. Our room was small but, because of the excellent and innovative use of space, it never felt cramped. Everything was spotlessly clean and the bed was comfortable. My only comment really is that the 'firm' pillow was a little too firm and felt quite solid, but they do offer soft pillows too.

Breakfast was included in the price of the room and offered a buffet of hot 'full English' items, pastries, toast, cereals, fruit, tea, coffee, fruit juices, etc.

For the price we paid this was a great stay, and we would certainly stay here again.

“will definitely return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I booked this as a last minute deal for myself and son (aged 8) and my daughter and my grandson (2) - I wasn't really expecting much as we just needed a bed for the night for a little mini getaway to rediscover the beautiful city of York. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. We arrived early in the morning and although we couldn't check in the receptionist was extremely helpful advising us of the bus routes/park and ride and other little bits and bobs. She offered to order a cab for us as we would be arriving back too late to make use of the park and ride. We were able to leave the car in the car park. After a lovely day in the city we returned about 9pm and were met by a different but equally as friendly and happy receptionist who booked us in efficiently. Our room was the usual for this kind of hotel - it was extremely clean, and the beds/pillows very comfy. Tea and coffee facilities etc. We had a shower - it would have been nice to have a bath to soak in after a long day but this is really a minor criticism. We paid £49.00 for the room and breakfast was included although I expected this to be cereals and toast it was a lovely surprise to find sausages, scrambled eggs, and beans under the hot plate. Cereals, fruit juice, muffins toast also available as well as tea and coffee. Absolute bargain! I hope to visiting York again fairly soon and I will definitely use this hotel again. Access to the city is easy - there is a park and ride about half a mile away - it costs £2.30 return (kids are free) - beware of the grumpy bus driver :D - there is also a Toby Carvery next door - we had our tea there before leaving on our second day and it was very nice. There is also a huge shopping mall/park next to the park and ride where you can easily spend a few hours if you like the main stream high street shops. I would also recommend the YAT pass which gets you into Jorvik, Micklegate, Barley House and DIG all year round - cost me £43.00 for all four of us - DIG is great for the kids and we spent over 3 hours in there digging up "artifacts" from the roman, viking and victorian era - loads of interesting information and it has given my lad a head start when he learns about the vikings later this year. Jorvic is also highly recommended and Barley House was my cup of tea but the kids were a bit bored as it is a medieval house displaying costumes etc. Next visit we will be going to the York Museum which is supposed to be fab. Oh and finally the railway museum is definitely worth a visit and it is free ... the 2 year old who is mad on Thomas was beside himself with glee when he saw all of the engines.

“Handy for York city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Stayed here for one night inbetween sessions of the UK Snooker at the Barbican, and before heading elsewhere in Yorkshire. It did what it said on the tin - convenient for York itself, only a 10minute drive into the centre, and the main ringroad in the other direction. We wouldn't choose to return to York out of choice, but it's not fair to write the hotel down for this.

The room itself was reasonably appointed - all the usual facilities including shower (no bath), although there was quite a bit of wind noise at night. It was blowing an especially forceful gale the night we stayed, so I can't comment on whether this would be a problem in "normal" conditions. The breakfast area could have been a bit bigger, and if more than a dozen or so rooms were to come down at once, it would have been a little interesting.

“would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights, the room was clean and spacious, all facilities were good, ample parking. Breakfast was good, tho like another reviewer, i would have liked to have the choice of bacon, it was always topped up though if anything i would say the lay out needed altering as im 4ft nothing and found it difficult to reach the hot breakfast dishes on the top shelf, when it was busy there was a queue of people all waiting for someone to move so other items (such as cereals, toast etc) could be accessed. That said, it was still good for a complimentary breakfast and nice to have the hot chocolate option, not normally available at breakfast in other hotels. There was some noise from the next room, namely the snoring but not overly so!! On the whole the staff were friendly and pleasant, with the odd exception but hey, we all have bad days !!
I would stay here again, its 3 miles from york, we parked in york itself at the princely sum of £12 so its definitely worth using the park and ride. Having the pub next door was also handy for a drink on an evening, we also ate there one night and the food was fine. Would stay here again.
