We had a day out in Whitby and on the spur of the moment decided to stay the night, we passed The George Hotel with a price outside of £50 for the room, so we went to Reception where a sign on the counter read £70 per room, but we decided to stay anyway, on booking the room we here informed that the £70 per night was only if you stayed for a minimum of two nights and it would be £80 for just one night. Rather than looking elsewhere we decided to stay.
The following comments are only picky, but for £80 for a nights stay, we would expect excellent service.
Room 10 (had a rubbish view, as other reviews have described) but was clean, However, there wasn't any shelving in either the bathroom or the shower at all (the soap and shampoo had to be stored on the floor when using the shower, and toiletries were stored on the one shelf we had in the room. We also noticed there wasn't any complimentary shampoos etc. (as this was an unplanned stay, we had to go and buy them). There wasn't any bedside tables for drinks and phones etc., we had to use the floor as tables.
The compimentary drinks tray in the corner of the room had a broken bulb so couldn't see what what we were making, and no complimentary biscuits.
We went down to complain to management about the value for money, an rather that a greeting of "Can I help you", we were greeted with "We are shut" and the young girl further explained that there wasn't any management on, nor would there be in the morning, and there was nothing the 2 barmaids could do, so we just left if and went back upstairs.
In the morning we went down for breakfast and as others have mentioned earlier, there was a smell of cleaning products etc., we were the only guest in the restaurant and there wasn't any heating on and the double doors were open for stock movement. It was freezing
And to cap it off, a cleaner came into the restaurant and filled her mop bucket up using the same hot water boiler we had just used to fill our coffee cups! She could have waited until we weren't looking.
If we had been charged the original £50 we wouldn't be complaining.
