“It is what it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

we were a large hen party and this hotel is fine for accommodating large parties, the rooms are basic and clean, the hotel itself is a bit grotty and could do with an overhaul,

it got really busy late Saturday night and the 'disco' was down stairs in the room used for breakfast next day, the floor was a bit sticky the next morning.

The hotel staff were mostly okay but gave the impression they couldn't be bothered, the cleaners were most unpleasant.

There was quite a bit of noise from the disco late on but we expected that, the seagulls were partying all night...

I definitely wouldn't stay here with my family but for a large party it's fine

Room Tip: bring shower gel, shampoo etc as it's not provided

“I'm glad we booked before reading the reviews”

We enjoyed our stay and would book again. I suppose it depends on your expectations,
after all it is a popular public bar aswell with entertainment and late license,so you expect to hear some noise.
The staff were helpful, the rooms were tidy and clean and the optional breakfast was very
good. We just booked for 2 nights and enjoyed our stay.

“Horrendous !”

Went for a Carvery meal and it was awful ! Waitress grunted at us when we asked if she could clean the table we were sat at, She then preceded to "drag" the chairs back and forth over the stone floorsnot caring about the noise she was making, Went up for the food and there was no "hello or can I help you" just a very curt "have you got your ticket". Was served the meat but had to stand like an idiot waiting for potatoes yorkshires and veg. When the soggy veg and greasy potatoes arrived the meat was cold. Altogether a very gloomy experience, luckily we had very nice meals and service from the other restaurants in the town the rest of the week. Would NOT recommend

“Review from the Rugby Tour point of view”

Yes it is a budget hotel, but you come away to see the sights, not look out the window or look up at the ceiling.
We had 2 nights the staff where ok, the door men at the hotel were understaning the management tried to forget we where there.
We were a group of over 50 rugby club members & we enjoyed our stay.
NOTE FOR GROUPS: it is a fantastic weekend in Whitby, but try not to upset the pub landlords, some of them are miserable farts & don't let you sing, they then contact pub watch & cry to everyone to bar you so just watch out.
Thanks again Whitby...STOCKSBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB

“Overpriced - for Quality & Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

We had a day out in Whitby and on the spur of the moment decided to stay the night, we passed The George Hotel with a price outside of £50 for the room, so we went to Reception where a sign on the counter read £70 per room, but we decided to stay anyway, on booking the room we here informed that the £70 per night was only if you stayed for a minimum of two nights and it would be £80 for just one night. Rather than looking elsewhere we decided to stay.

The following comments are only picky, but for £80 for a nights stay, we would expect excellent service.

Room 10 (had a rubbish view, as other reviews have described) but was clean, However, there wasn't any shelving in either the bathroom or the shower at all (the soap and shampoo had to be stored on the floor when using the shower, and toiletries were stored on the one shelf we had in the room. We also noticed there wasn't any complimentary shampoos etc. (as this was an unplanned stay, we had to go and buy them). There wasn't any bedside tables for drinks and phones etc., we had to use the floor as tables.

The compimentary drinks tray in the corner of the room had a broken bulb so couldn't see what what we were making, and no complimentary biscuits.

We went down to complain to management about the value for money, an rather that a greeting of "Can I help you", we were greeted with "We are shut" and the young girl further explained that there wasn't any management on, nor would there be in the morning, and there was nothing the 2 barmaids could do, so we just left if and went back upstairs.

In the morning we went down for breakfast and as others have mentioned earlier, there was a smell of cleaning products etc., we were the only guest in the restaurant and there wasn't any heating on and the double doors were open for stock movement. It was freezing

And to cap it off, a cleaner came into the restaurant and filled her mop bucket up using the same hot water boiler we had just used to fill our coffee cups! She could have waited until we weren't looking.

If we had been charged the original £50 we wouldn't be complaining.
