“Perfect for couples on a short break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2011

Upon arrival we were informed that we had been upgraded to one of the Executive rooms due to it being calm during our mid week stay. We found the owners very pleasant and the car park was more than adequate for us. The property is a short walk from the marina, and despite being on a main road we found it to be fairly quiet during our stay.
The room we stayed in was 'Leaholm', it had a comfortable four poster bed and plenty of storage space. The room was clean and tastefully decorated, as was the en-suite with a large walk in power shower. The room was well stocked with tea and coffee and we felt very much at home whilst we were there.
The breakfast was served from 9 till half 9 in a clean and attractive breakfast room, this left us enough time to relax in the room before going down. There is a really wide selection for breakfast, including traditional smoked Whitby kippers which are a real must. Service was friendly and fast without feeling rushed.
Overall this is a lovely place to stay whilst in Whitby. Having stayed in an Executive room, I would recommend booking one of them. There is just enough luxury to make it feel special without losing that friendly touch.

“chintz-free zone with parking and good power showers...”

I have often stayed at the Hillcrest on work related trips and found Jayne and Steve (the owners) helpful and accommodating, so am surprised to read some of these reviews. The location is good, with parking, which is a huge plus in Whitby. The breakfasts are hearty and well cooked, choice is brilliant, love the smoked salmon and scrambled egg, (but ask for your salmon to be cut in small pieces and cooked with your egg, as Steve serves it in a huge separate slice otherwise) ....have often had to ask to eat earlier than other guests with no problem. Rooms are modern, no chintz which is great, and the power showers are superb. Being a softie I do find the bathrooms a bit cool, but, hey everything else is so good!

“Nice location , but tiny room, unwelcoming owners”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

We have just returned from a weekend break in Whitby at the Hillcrest guest house. On arrival we were met by the cleaner / waitress who showed us to our rooms, I would have at least expected to be met by one of the owners to give us a friendly welcome and to show us round the place. We did bump into the owner who asked us to move our car forward this being his warm welcome. The room (Grosmont) was tiny considering it was £90 and a"standard room" which had hardly any room to put anything away which meant we kept tripping over things and each other while trying to get ready. When we complained we were told that is what a standard room was.
The location was good and the breakfast was excellent. We had a good time but would not use this Guesthouse again due to the tiny room and unfriendly owners.

“fantastic for a little get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

We arrived a little early before check in and where allowed to leave our car in the car park while exploring whitby. Before comming back to check in. The room Glaisdale was beautifully clean and decorated to a high standard. Was at the back of the property so little noise from the road. There was a large variety for breakfast in the morning and the full English was good. would definately stop there again and recommend to friends.

“Not all its made out to be!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

Having booked in for 3 nights at £100 pnight I would say this is an expensive B&B for what you get. The room is on the front of the building on a busy road and extremely noisey with not only traffic but revellers on a Friday & Saturday night. No bath and no dressing table to sit at!! Breakfast is served between 9 and 9.30am sharp and as everyone arrives at the same time can be lengthy. Very disappointed when we got here as the location is not fantastic. The car parking is also very bad.

We also found the owners very distant and unwelcoming, we were glad to leave a day earlier than planned!!
