“Don't go”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

We booked a room and paid the deposit in advance, and the remainder for our stay at arrival, before we were able to see our room etc. I now understand why - what a complete waste of money. While on the (very narrow & steep so no good for anyone with buggies etc) stairs up to my room I heard another couple complaining and asking for a refund etc. Our room was tiny, with an extremely uncomfortable bed and was not very well cleaned. The breakfast was do it yourself - and wash up yourself etc - from a small selection of sliced breads and crumpets which everyone else had been through. We ended up buying breakfast every day and left a day early. We really liked Whitby, but the B&B spoilt what was meant to be a relaxing, well earned break. I don't mind staying in hostels or camping, but I don't expect to book and pay for a B&B and get a hostel.

All mattresses are new and are perfectly clean, having mattress protecters. The comment that a couple asked for a refund, is infact UNTRUE. Therefor I will comment no further, as that says it all BASICALLY.

“Terrible, not a guest house more of a student hostel”

If you want your hard earned holiday to consist of cleaning up other people's dirty breakfast dishes before you can get your own family something to eat from a diminished selection of already mauled over food then this is the place for you. This place is more like a student house with noone taking responsibility for anything. It was truly awful. The owner Nicola is frequently absent and never around to sort out any issues. This was not a holiday but an endurance test. I refused to pay the full price as I was misled by the website. Some people have written in their review it is a quirky place - yes I suppose the chewing gum above the shower was a quirky touch, along with the uncleaned rooms and stale bread and drunk owner falling in late at night. If you feel you deserve a relaxing holiday -do yourself a favour and avoid this entirely.

Well the FACT that I did not go out during August/ September and October says it all. NO FURTHER COMMENT IS NEEDED. It puts all the comments into dispute.

“truly awful!”

arrived at midday as arranged to find no one at the hotel. Tried both numbers printed on a bit of paper stuck to the door. Could not get an answer so went for a walk around Whitby.
Finally got through to Nicola and got to the hotel around 3 in the afternoon.
We were shown to our room at the top of the building which appeared to be an attic.
The room was tiny. Just enough room for the bed. there was nothing else to sit on.
The bathroom was also tiny, it would have been impossible to stand up in the bath. Trying to shave was almost impossible.
Getting out of bed was tricky as you nearly always banged your head on the sloping roof.
The website said that breakfast was available all morning.
When I enquired about this I was told that we had to make our own breakfast!
Nicola said that a lot of people preferred this! When I complained about the tiny room she replied that it was 'quirky'.
Needless to say, we left after only one night and found some decent accomodation at the Avalon hotel.
My advice is to avoid this place at all costs!

“dont be put off by negative comments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

Stayed here for 1 night.Greeted by Nichola and offered a choice of 2 rooms 3 or 5,opted for 5. The attic room at the top of 35 steps, but it is the attic !!!
A very good view, through the skylight. Very clean and tidy.A quirky room with all space made use of,the bathroom was a challenge but we managed it.
The use of kitchen is a good idea as you can have what you want ,toast cereals crumpets jams etc.The facility is there for you to use whenever you want,a nice touch.

We would stay here again as it ticked all the right boxes.

“Laid-back, friendly and atmospheric.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2010

This was the second time we stayed here and it was perfect for a romantic weekend. The location of the guesthouse, overlooking the harbour, is great. The narrow building, steep stairs and little passages and courtyard behind are incredibly atmospheric. The rooms are small, but extremely clean and comfortable. The room was warm, the bed comfortable, the en-suite bathroom clean and smart. We love the self-service breakfast - it's way more relaxing than more formal arrangements. The landlady is friendly. No, the room was not serviced daily, but we felt that made it more private for us, and although we did run out of bedside tea/coffee, we were able to go downstairs and make a cuppa; and had we asked, I am sure we would have been provided with more.
