“Nice hotel, lovely breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We stayed here on a cheap groupon deal for two nights and were given the Scoresby room which was very small and had a view of the tiles of the neighbouring roof. The sash window was slightly rotten at the bottom. The bed was fairly comfortable and the bathroom small and had no shower curtain so water went everywhere. It was well supplied with a good selection of tea and coffee etc and was warm and well lit. It had a CD/radio, the CD bit didn't work but the radio did. There is no TV reception but there was a small TV connected to a DVD player and DVDs were available from reception (we didn't use them so don't know what the selection was like). The staff were friendly and breakfast was served in a room downstairs. The breakfast menu was excellent, between us we had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, Gruyere cheese omelette and kippers, all of which were beautiful. Would stay again, I assume the room we were given reflected the fact we were only paying £99 for two nights B+B!

“Tough one”

Being regular visitors to Whitby, we've always considered the white horse and griffin, but due to cost always stayed elsewhere. When the groupon deal became available we took the chance of two days for less than half the normal price. On the way there we received a phone call from them asking what time we would arrive as the don't open wednesdays and upon arriving the check in was rushed and we were not made to feel welcome. The building is great, and the room (provider) was of the period with some lovely features such as the fireplace. Bedding was probably some of the cleanest we've seen and the room was well stocked with teas and coffees.
Many disappointing factors over shadowed the character of the room, lack of a working tv, a radio covered in thick dust, poor cleanliness in the bathroom which included a used condom surrounded by piles of bird poo just outside the window. I don't like jumping from poo to food but the breakfast is great, with excellent full English. So what should have been a great stay turned into a poor one due to lack of customer care and cleanliness. Upon checking out we thanked them for having us to which the response was er yeah, ok... Whitby has some great places to stay for a similar price, would I stay at the white horse again...Er no.

“Groupon deal a big let down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We stayed at the White Horse and Griffin for two nights this week on a Groupon deal we bought late last year. In total we paid £100 for two nights B&B, which was for an upgraded room as they couldn't offer us a standard room.
We were really looking forward to our stay, as my wife is due in just over two months and we planned this as our last break before the baby is born. Unfortunately our stay turned out to be a real let down...

- on arrival it was not that straightforward to find reception, could be more welcoming
- Our room although a good size wasn't great, with dirty curtains, a ripped bedspread, dusty mirror (which despite writing 'clean me' in the dust was still the same the second morning)
- No toilet roll in the bathroom (awkward when you are both getting ready to go out)
- The bathroom looked like it was in the midst of being renovated and wasn't great. Hard to have a shower, which I wouldn't expect for the money
- The breakfast on the first morning was poor, as my wife's mushrooms were cold and the black pudding still had the skin on and was difficult to eat. (we were thinking of eating in the hotel on the second night, but his changed our minds)

It was a real shame, as the hotel has the makings of a lovely boutique hotel, if only it had some money spent on it and the attention to detail was there. We have stayed at The Moon and Sixpence before and it was far better, but doesn't have the same potential as the White Horse and Griffin..

For £100 for our stay this was about right, however I would be appalled to pay the quoted £324 for the stay. Whitby is lovely, the location of the hotel was great, but needs to improve dramatically.

“Needs a facelift”

My recent visit to Whitby staying at the White Horse and Griffin booked through Groupon was once again a very enjoyable stay at the Town but slightly disappointed with the accommodation.

The WHG was really a Restaurant with rooms in my eyes, the restaurant being superb whatever time of day or night.
The room we stayed in 'Warrior Queen' was very dark and had old not antique furniture with a quite dirty in patches carpet. A bathroom with a hold it yourself shower so used the bath.
A flue at the edge of one wall inside the room, so everytime a boiler on quite a noise from this whatever it was.
A tv in the room but no tv signal, a small selection of DVDs at reception available if required.

Good points though unlimited hot water and the radiator was on 24 hrs so the room warm, and the bed was comfortable. We only booked for 2 nights and for the price we paid can not grumbe and did not complain to anyone.

Will definitely go back to Whitby again but probably not stay at WHG, and most certainly not pay the full price they ask for at the hotel.

Room Tip: Warrior Queen quite noisy and dark

“Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Only stayed for one night but enjoyed the evening. Bags of old world charm. Stayed in the room called Scoresby, maybe slightly overpriced but a comfortable night. Staff were lovely and friendly, and my husband and I ate at he restaurant in the evening. The food was beautiful, will definitely go back there in the future.
