Without doubt, the Gramarye is the best boutique B&B at which we have ever had the pleasure of spending a leisurely weekend. Warmly greeted at the door by our hostess Molly, who truly managed to skip up the stairs with my better half’s heavy suitcase, we were ushered to the Gothic suite where our jaws dropped in appreciation of the effort that had gone into making the decor so appealing.
An outrageously large and sumptuous bathroom annexed our generously proportioned bedroom. Period armchairs, an occasional table adorned with a complimentary bowl of fruit, a mantlepiece guarded by a couple of gargoyles; a small fridge with complimentary water and fresh milk; a generous tray of refeshments including fresh ground coffee and a cafetiere, quality toiletries in a most interesting container, luxuriant towels, hair dryer and ironing facilities and satellite tv all contributed to making our weekend away something special and I have not yet mentioned breakfast.
To the classic accompaniment of Vivaldi and Handel this was a veritable royal feast and I defy any five star hotel to offer better fayre. Ably assisted, only at weekends we hear, by Molly’s very knowledgeable husband John, any combination of freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, croissants, home baked artisan breads, cereals and never ending coffees and teas were available and served as mere appetizers for what was yet to come. Choices of contintental style breakfasts with a variety of bread rolls, cheeses and Serrano ham; lightly scrambled eggs with smoked salmon flakes; the English Full Monty with dry cured bacon and artisan sausage supplied by their local butcher (who incidentally holds a game licence); or local cured Whitby kippers were all there on the Gramarye’s extensive menu.
A special mention must be made for Molly’s amazing homemade jams Strawberry with Lavender and Strawberry with Gooseberry and her wonderfully tangy fresh orange marmalade that was to die for. Where on earth do you get the time? – you run a busy 5 star B&B. Molly and John have certainly set the standard at the Gramarye, and it’s now up to the others to considerably raise their game. We cannot find words to praise the Gramarye Suites highly enough and we thoroughly recommend this first class B&B to those who appreciate something a little bit special yet offering outstanding value for money.
Many many thanks to you both for a very very special weekend.
Top Tip. Book Direct and don’t forget to ask John where to eat when out and about in Whitby and, if he likes you, he may even be persuaded to spill the beans on the whereabouts of a couple of secret carparks.
