“Hmmm”

Just returned from 2 nights self drive at the Royal in Whitby. Some good, some not so good, The good - lovely spacious room on the first floor. Fabulous view and worth paying extra for a sea view. We had asked for a low floor and a room with a bath and got both. The room was clean and very warm. Good solid bed so slept really well. Entertainment on the Saturday night was a Shirley Bassey tribute and she was a great act to watch. Evening meal good (with a but....) and breakfast ok.
The not so good - cold, cold bathroom with a bathroom suite from the seventies, lack of hot water for a bath, a tiny TV from the sixties (maybe being a bit kind there!) with limited channels, lovely evening meal served at you like you were in a race (given time to enjoy each course would have enhanced the experience) this being due to the one hour time slot being allocated to the meal, not sure when some of breakfast had been cooked.
We have stayed at hotels costing much less than this one and have been more impressed. Little things like being able to have juice AND cereal for breakfast instead of having to pick do matter and although we had not travelled to Whitby to watch TV, in this day and age a decent digital TV is the norm in most hotels. We love Whitby and will be back but despite the plus points, it wont be to this hotel.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Time and time again the views from our sea view bedrooms are mentioned on here and I couldn’t agree more about the stunning views – we are very lucky indeed. The Shirley Bassey tribute is as you say a great act who always gets a very good reaction. I’m pleased you slept well whilst here in comfortable surroundings.
I will look into the problems you experienced with the room and will ensure these are rectified. With regards to the TV’s I understand your points but Whitby doesn’t in fact go digital until towards the end of this year so unfortunately we do still only have the 4 channels. With regards to your comments on the meal times, whilst dinner does run from 6.30-7.30pm, we do not expect all guests to be in and out in this time. I’m sorry you felt your meals were rushed and had you brought this to your waiter/waitress’ attention the pace could easily have been slowed down. There is no problem whatsoever with having juice as well as cereal etc.
I am sorry to see you were disappointed during your stay and hope it won’t deter you from booking with bay hotels in the future.

“May from Houston and 3 "girls" to The Royal Hotel, Whitby 20 Jan 2012”

Three friends and I stayed at the Royal Hotel in Whitby with Caledonian Travel. We had a lovely en-suite room overlooking the sea and nice and cosy.. The hotel is a little old fashioned but the staff were all very pleasant and it was good value. The breakfast was excellent and the dinner was ok. Ideal for couples and friends. The entertainment was very good especially on the Saturday and Sunday. Only problem was one very small lift. However we will certainly go back again.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the 3rd floor. Nice and spacious and good view.

Thank you for your lovely comments. The views from the sea view bedrooms are certainly not to be missed. Whilst some might consider some areas of the hotel to be old fashioned we try very hard to keep the decor etc in line with the building. I have a fantastic team here at the Royal and I will be sure to pass your comments onto them. I am pleased to see you made full use of the entertainment and enjoyed it.
We hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future.

“"Excellent value and all inclusive"”

We stayed here in January with National Holidays. We had 3 days and 2 nights and it included a free bar from 19.30 to 22.30, entertainment is included also along with excursions. The meals were very good, more to the point the choices were plentiful and the restaurant staff just could not do enough for you they were pleasant, polite and nothing was too much trouble for any of them. The evening entertainment consisted of quizzes and a wonderful singer called Joel.
Some of the rooms are a little tired and need some TLC, although we could not complain about ours which was on the third floor as it was bright, very warm, plenty of hangars in the wardrobe, plenty of drawer space and the room & bathroom was very spacious. Although I know some did say their rooms were cold. It was lovely to have tea, coffee (decaf & normal), and hot chocolate too and replaced daily without asking. The hotel itself is a very old listed building and with this it has it's own quirkiness and all rooms downstairs are in keeping with it's character. The only downside for me was the lift it is too small and can be very cosy with 3 or more people in it especially if you are not Twiggy. The town is about 15 mins walk away down a steep descent but there are plenty of seats for you to take rests on the way down & back up. The Abbey is not too far away either and there are 199 steps if you want to go to the top not for the faint-hearted. All in all we had an excellent time and would recommend this hotel and yes we will go back as we love Whitby.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was 319 and was very bright and spacious you was not bumping into each other a...

Many thanks for taking the time to share your views. It is very pleasing to see such favourable comments with regards to the food and the restaurant staff who all work very hard. Joel is a fantastic talent and is always very well received. I am pleased to see you were pleased with your room facilities and found it comfortable.
I agree that the hotel is an old building but with this comes character, something I feel the Royal has plenty of. We try hard to keep all areas in keeping with the style of the building. Whilst indeed the lift is small, it is in keeping with the age and style of the building.
We are in a fantastic location enjoying some of the best views the town has to offer with a regular public transport service to avoid the climb back from town.
Again, thank you for taking the time to leave your comments and we hope to welcome you back to the Royal soon.

“A hotel with ups and downs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012
3
people found this review helpful

The downsides -
~ Cold water every evening for shower/bath.
~ Blankets on the bed, not duvets - how unhygienic, they are not washed after every customers use
~ Lift broke down on first day, but in fairness was quickly repaired
~ Not enough staff in restaurant - one waitress for whole room therefore delays in being served.
~ Although plenty of choice on menu, the food was bland, and unappetising
~ Only 1 hour (6:30 - 7:30) allowed to get evening meal.

The Upsides
~ Location ~ pay extra for a sea view. Hotel is on top of hill with views out to sea, and across the harbour to the Abbey.
~ Excursions - Full Day Thornton-Le- Dale, Pickering & Helmsley, Half Day to Scarborough, optional - along the coast to Guiseborough.
~ Entertainment - quizzes, singer, comic, and only one night with Bingo. Yippee.
~ Price - but we have learned not to book early. The deductions and special offers reduce the price nearer the departure date
~ Whitby - a lovely town that I would re-visit, but would think twice about staying at the Royal

Room Tip: Pay the supplement for a sea view.
