“Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

Having noticed the Woodlands when we stayed at a small b+b earlier in the year, this was a place we definitely wanted to try and it didn't disappoint! In fact it exceeded our expectations.
We booked at short notice and only one night was available over the bank holiday weekend. This was in Jasper, the African themed room which we were more than delighted with. It was beautifully decorated with a large comfy bed and had the feel of a high quality boutique hotel. The communal areas were very stylish and boho with a mixture of shabby chic and contemporary furnishings. We enjoyed relaxing there with a glass of wine (from the kitsch honest bar!) after a long day's walk on the wide sandy beach.
We had a superb dinner at Woodlands Eat and a delicious breakfast there next day. The staff were very attentive and helpful.
Woodlands is set in a beautiful picturesque valley and is a great, chilled out, relaxed place to stay. We will definitely return as we want to try out all the rooms!
The cafe bistro is definitely worth a visit.

“Loved the rooms....something bit different!!”

This hotel was lovely... :-) The rooms were all individual with their own stamp. The place was clean and tidy-obviously the owners work hard to maintain a good standard. Really chilled/relaxed feel. Definately a place to book for a treat...

“Most enjoyable short break - excellent standard both 'sleeps' and 'eats'”

Our experience of the Woodlands was uniformly positive. The hotel and its restaurant have been separated into distinct buildings a few minutes' walk apart; this might be considered a disadvantage (and it might be in wet weather) but we enjoyed the short walk before and after dinner.

The hotel is is small, intimate, interesting - very much a family enterprise, and the atmosphere is that of sharing in a family home. Our room (Imogen) was large, comfortable, well-appointed and spotless. An honesty bar is provided downstairs - I enjoyed Old Peculier (this is the spelling...).

The cuisine in the restaurant is excellent - plenty of choice for both vegetarians and carnivores. On one night, the spinach was slightly gritty but this is a tiny criticism since the overall standard was truly excellent. We particluarly enjoyed the brill and halibut and I also had an excellent goats cheese tart and a rather fine carrot and thyme soup.

The beach and the surrounding cliff and woodland walks are outstanding. Lizzie and her family are relaxed, welcoming, hard working and attentive. Highly recommended.

“A beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

We stayed here for two nights for my birthday and had a lovely relaxing weekend. The hotel is set back from the coast through a really cute little village green, and was very quiet and beautifully decorated.
We stayed in Isabella which had a slipper bath and sea views. Plenty of space to relax with a little table and comfy chairs too. No tv but one downstairs if you really can't do without. It was nice to just relax with a book and a glass of wine though (honesty bar downstairs which is a great idea if you fancy a drink in your room)
On the first morning we ordered the breakfast hamper to our room (no extra charge like most places) A huge wicker hamper arrived filled not only with a huge selection of tasty food but vintage china too - perfect for a birthday breakfast that lasted us for lunch too over the course of a lazy day.
We had our second breakfast, and also an evening meal in the restaurant just down the road. The food was excellent, all locally sourced and a bit different to your average restaurant.
All in all, a fantastic weekend. I would love to return and try out the other rooms.

“We only lasted one night due to the smell of drains in our room.”

This is a beautifully presented hotel in an exquisite location but unfortunately the people who run it lack the vital ingredient in running a successful hospitality business - they do not mind what you experience.
We were staying in 'Louis' which is blighted by a strong smell of drains. On arrival we opened all the windows and my builder husband set to trying to resolve the problem, filling bath and sink traps and trying to locate the smell. Each time we came back into the room we were assaulted by the foul smell. We did not sleep much. After breakfast we asked if the smell was in all the rooms and were told just ours and the ladies toilet (very obvious), and it had been a problem for a little while! We asked to change room for our second night, which was not possible and we were offered air freshener! There was no way we could stay another night, so we checked out. There was no apology and no offer of compensation.
How could we want to go back or recommend a place where the people care so little about your experience.
