We stayed at Apartment 9e Unthank Road for 2 nights and soon realised that the address was very apt as we had very little for which to thank MJB! Like previous reviewers, we endured the constant smell of damp and sewage, a damp-blackened window frame and wall in the living room area, no hot water in the kitchen and bathroom for most of our stay and frustratingly incompetent responses to our repeated telephone requests for matters to be remedied.
Things did not start well as, on arrival, the smell of sewage was all pervading despite the fact that the cleaners had left windows open in every room in order to 'air' the apartment prior to our occupancy. In fairness the rooms were clean, as were the bedlinen and bath towels, but the tea towel in the kitchen was stained and dirty. There was no handle on the door from the bedroom to the bathroom/toilet and it was impossible to close the door which therefore remained clearly ajar even when the bathroom and/or toilet were in use.
Having been out in the afternoon and early evening of our first day's stay, we reported the lack of hot water on our return to the apartment and were informed that it was too late for a maintenance person to come out! Fortunately the shower in the bathroom was an electric shower which worked independently of the hot water system but the MJB 'receptionist' who answered my call did not know that at the time. She assured me that a maintenance man would come the next morning at 10am. When this did not happen I waited until 11am before telephoning again to remind MJB, only to find that the new 'receptionist' had no record of my previous request. However, she promised to arrange for a maintenance man to be at the apartment within the hour. Again the maintenance man failed to appear and I telephoned once more at 1pm, just prior to leaving the apartment to attend a wedding, and was assured that the hot water would be fixed within the hour!
Needless to say, upon our return at 3.30pm, nothing had been done. We were due to attend the wedding reception at 4pm and had returned to collect a change of clothes for the evening function which was scheduled. However, when we attempted to open the main door to the bedroom, the handle mechanism had broken and the door was jammed shut! Once again I telephoned MJB and spoke to yet another 'receptionist' who had no knowledge of my previous calls and concerns! I explained the urgency of the need to collect our clothing and again informed them of the ongoing hot water problem. I stated that, if MJB did not send somebody within 15 minutes, I would kick open the door and it would cause some damage. Amazingly a maintenance man appeared within 5 minutes! However, true to form, he did not have the tools to open the door or mend the hot water boiler but he knew a man who could! At this point we lost patience and demanded to be relocated to another apartment immediately whereupon he apologised profusely and 'guaranteed' that the door and the boiler would be put right before our return from the wedding festivities. Under the circumstances, we had no choice but to accept and left without our change of clothes.
In the end the main bedroom door and hot water boiler were mended but I have never experienced such inept customer service or such poor facilities in a hotel/apartment. Travellers beware, 9e Unthank Road lives up to its name!
