“Excellent value for money, would choose again.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

My girlfriend and I made a last minute decision to stay at The MJB Lodge last night. I looked into last minute available rooms on Laterooms and found two of the MJB Group hotels listed, this one being for £20 for a family room that sleeps 6 (number 3 - one of the rooms accessed from the outside with Double and two Bunks). We decided to give it a go (every other hotel left was at least £40!) and were prepared to accept the worst...! We needn't have had such concern. Entry to the rooms is by a key code issued via email from the central office 5 minutes away in Earlham Road as there are no staff present on any of the sites. Having booked late, I did have to ring the office to obtain the code but the lady I spoke to was most helpful, she advised me to contact her if we had any further problems. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. Now at £20 for a room that could sleep 6 don't expect The Ritz but what we were presented with was clean and comfortable and had a few little extras that you sadly no longer find at Travelodge (towel rail, pictures, shampoo etc!) Room 3 has three separate areas (like an apartment without a kitchenette) which kept the Bunk Beds out of our way! The bed was comfortable and we had a very good night's sleep. The room was generally very quiet as it is not surrounded on three sides and lies out the back of the Hotel. The only noise we did find was in the morning from a Van driver in the car park who kept his engine running! The only real negatives we found were with some of the decor within the room: a few scuffs and marks here and there, blown lightbulb, coat hook with very loose screws on the wall and some damage to the television. But overall we were very satisfied and having stayed at a few of the Budget Hotels in Norwich I would choose this again, particularly over the new Riverside Travelodge. Highly recommend it for a group of friends who want to cost share at just over 3 quid a night!

“Give this place a wide berth, very badly run!!”

I have stayed at this hotel the year before, was booked into one of their apartments in Upper St.Giles Street and it was wonderful. By contrast, had to stay at the hotel for the second night which was terrible.

Booked again last November for the apartment mentioned, not ready or cleaned on our arrival and the delay in arranging this ruined our arrangements made for that first evening. Cafe 91 downstairs owned by the MJB Group ripped us off, letter of complaint to the management completely ignored.

The arrogant and rude man that owns the hotel chain will, I hope, go bust in a very short space of time. I will not be returning there.

“Comfortable, no frills stay...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2009

We stayed here for convenience and the price on Boxing Day 2008 so we didn't have drive home that night (had been at a party). Service was friendly and room was large and clean - unusual layout, but very spacious. We paid around 40 pounds, and cannot complain - it fulfilled it's purpose. We even got to keep the car there the next day and walk into town (not far at all - approx between 5-10mins) which was very handy as the post-Christmas sales were in full force and the roads were a nightmare!
We had the first room to the right of the front door in the old vicarage (the building next door) and although the place was empty that night, I'd expect it gets very noisy with people coming and going and slamming the front door (room door is not sealed/sound proofed) - so beware. Otherwise, good, comfortable place where price is relative to what you get - no complaints at all!

Clean, Warm and comfortable rooms, basically furnished, but overall very good value for money. Breakfast was excellent and staff were helpful.

“Please dont waste your money!!!”

Myself and my partner stayed here for a coupe days, bit of a break from the kids....rather i was at home, more peaceful! we stayed in room 20 and were kept up all night by a security light which was to be honest brighter then a bed side lamp, i would have been able to read a book perfectly in that light!! secondly, the room was dirty, think theyneed to sack the housekeepers!! im not sure who were next to us but they came in at stupid o'clock in the morning and were having an argument pretty much all night!!! The breakfast was well...awful! the lady serving the breakfast looked as though she was about to kill herself in all honesty, she was miserable and winey and didnt smile once while we were in the breakfast room! As for the reception staff, i think maybe they need more training as we made our complaints known he just shrugged his shoulders and said sorry.....hmmm!!! When asked if there was a manager he started babbling about how there isnt a full time manager there and that they spread their time between hotels and their cafe, not very good for a buisness not having a manager on sight!!! It was awful, the whole stay turned into a nightmare! Please, for your own benefit dont stay at this hotel!

  • Liked — the fact you have a 24 hour bedroom lamp if needed!!!
  • Disliked — absolutly everything
