“Disappointing experience; hotel living in a parallel universe in terms of standards required.”

On arrival at the hotel, we were a little dismayed at the entrance. The picture on the website is most flattering, and in reality, it's a shabby porch around the back of a carpark. The general decor of the hotel is very dated, and the rooms are no exception. In addition, we arrived to find a sink that didn't work, a shower that must have been installed 40 years ago, and a grubby bath. In short, this is in no way a 4* hotel, and we were exceedingly disappointed. Possibly just a 3*. Despite all this, however, the staff were friendly and the bedding clean.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding our staff; we are currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment with nearly half of our room stock already complete.

Your maintenance issues have been addressed and we look forward to continuing to provide a higher level of personal service.

“A very tired hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

This hotel is in dire need of modernisation.
Scruffy carpets, dreary decor.
waitress service was very slow, particularly in the evening to serve small portions of pretty average food.
The TV system in the room was unusually complicated to operate, If you just wish to watch terestrial TV you have to go through about 6 steps. It failed to work at all for 24 hours,
There is NO LIFT in the hotel. One evening I had to assist an elderly lady down the stairs as she was struggling. She said that she was with a large coach party of elderly citizens visiting a nearby Christmas event and that they were all moaning about the lack of a lift.
The leisure centre spa was over chlorinated compared to others I had used otherwise the leisure centre was very good.
I had no complaints regarding the cleanliness of the hotel which I found was very good,
I am still awaiting a copy of my invoice which I have now requested twice.
Beer was £4,00 a pint, - good pub over the road selling beer at half the price.

Room Tip: If you are likely to struggle with the stairs try and get a downstairs room.

Thank you for your review. Our hotel is in fact undergoing a staged modernisation and a good proportion of our rooms have been fully refurbished.

Our lack of passenger lift does not present may issues as we are largely built on two floors, with a third of our rooms on the ground floor.

I appreciate your kind comments regarding our leisure club and the cleanliness of our hotel.

“Good Basic Hotel”

Stayed here for two nights on a short break in early December 2011. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean, I think it could have been refurbished recently and we had everything we needed including a hairdryer which isn't advertised on the website.
We had breakfast and evening meal.
The breakfast buffet was crowded at times but there was plenty to choose from. As usual eggs were overcooked but the bacon was delicious. The evening meals were fine although some courses were better than others. The pool looked very inviting but we didn't have time to sample it. If you can get a good room rate it is certainly worth trying.

“Would recommend”

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, i stayed here in November with 3 of my friends. The hotel was clean, the staff were really friendly and helpful when it came to booking a taxi into the city (which was only about £4). The facilities were brilliant an added bonus to have a swimming pool (although not very big), sauna, jacuzzi and gym on site. Parking facilities were excellent plenty of space, clean towels, nice smellies. All in all a lovely place to stay.

“Just short of being good!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Reception staff were pleasant and efficient which was a good start. Parking facilities were excellent with plenty of room for everyone.
I like the plumbing in Mecure hotels (a legacy from Ramada hotels) and filling the bath tub is really quick and the showers are also efficient and easy to control. The room was clean with adequate wardrobe space.
The restaurant was spacious and the staff friendly if not overly efficient. The evening menu is somewhat limited but the food was cooked well enough. The breakfasts were plentiful but the English fare was overcooked.
The bar facilities let the hotel down. Overpriced drinks and cramped conditions spoil the experience in this hotel. So the mixture of the poor with the good things about this particular hotel, give it an average rather than a good rating.

Thank you very much for your review and kind comments regarding the hotel in general.

It sounds like our bar was particularly busy during your stay, and I am sorry that you found our bar prices expensive. We do position our bar prices in line with other 4 star hotels, rather than local bars.

Thank you once again for the review and I sincerely hope that you stay with us again and find more positive aspects of the hotel.
