“Without doubt one of the worst”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I stayed here for approximately 4 weeks while working in Cleveland. It's like a time machine back to the 80's as it has not been decorated since then. One week I checked in went to the room found it had a bathroom so dirty it could have been the toilet from trainspotting staff gave me another room but no apology. Another week I got a room, glad I am fairly handy with DIY as I had to remove the window panes and re-seat them on the runners so I would not freeze in the December weather.

The restaurant is poor, but not desperately worse than another other average hotel restaurant.

The only reason I stayed there was because the attached gym is excellent and really well equipped a total opposite of the hotel.

“Review of the Restaurant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

They took the reasonably-priced and decent-looking menu off us and gave us freshly printed ones with poorer choice at higher prices (it was also littered with spelling mistakes - chicken "brest" was a favourite - and a random mix of font and text sizes).

We were amused by the text written above the door, but considering the number of spelling mistakes in their menu, we weren't sure if it was deliberately tongue in cheek, or simply another batch of spelling mistakes (referring to the lodge as a "plaice to meat").

I paid £8 for a chicken salad that was adequate but was served at same time as my husbands starter. So I got to watch him eat his main course foodless. The salad was nice ... but certainly not £8 worth of nice ... perhaps half that bearing in mind the current price of small bits of chicken, salad leaves and cucumber. The cashews, I guess, were the expensive bit - but its hard to get them wrong! Despite being advertised as "satay", the cashew nuts were as nutty as it got.

Service was patchy - we got given salt, pepper, sauces and cutlery, together with our drinks, to carry to the table ourselves.

My husband took advantages of the "three courses for a tenner" menu (which, strangely, is advertised as "tennerfest ... 3 courses for £12" on their website!!) - the souffle starter was obviously microwaved and tasted like left-overs from a cheese quiche; the fish and chips were adequate but I could have done better with frozen food from Tesco; the Creme Brulee was basically sweet runny custard with some icing sugar on top (which looked like it had been grilled briefly - definately not caramelised - we were amused that it came with a spoon AND a fork .. perhaps the fork was for the strawberry garnish!). The best my husband could say was the half-strawberry was nice!

“A good comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Ive stayed in many hotels in and around the North East, but never before in this hotel. The hotel is a little dated and needs a refurbishment, although it very clean and the satff a fantastic, very helpful and pleasant. The Old Poste House Pub is very nice although i was a little disappointed with the menu choice. Overall i had a good two nights stay and will stay there again.

“Tired rooms, but worth the money for facilities...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011 via mobile

Stayed here this weekend with my wife. The rooms are tired and the bed wasn't very supportive, woke at 5am with back ache! Saying that, we enjoyed the stay! The room was clean, the staff were great, the gym and pool are free for people staying and are well worth the money. The breakfast was a good standard and the restaurant staff couldn't do enough for us. Lovely setting and a great location for shopping etc, lots to do and plenty of retail parks nearby. would come back again!
