“Overpriced for Room but Excellent Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Stayed here on Business paid £147.00 for a night with breakfast which was very good but a little overpriced really rooms could do with a makeover but i must say what very professional staff from front desk to resturant we did not eat there at night but went back for a drink and it had a good atmosphrere for a hotel bar and a very good location.Stayed a the Thistle Haydock two weeks ago i think they are all in need of a update but always clean

“Comfortable Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I recently booked a one night stay for myself and my wife to enable us to attend a family funeral. The room was excellent with the minor gripe that the bed was so broad it felt like sleeping on your own. The staff were attentive and helpful although there was only one person at the reception desk which caused a little bit of a delay. The room TV doesn't include SKY but they did show SKY Sports in the bar. The food was excellent, in particular the buffet breakfast but the Dinner menu was a bit limited and quite expensive for what you got. The bar was a bit pricey as well. There is a small carpark attached but they charge £3 per day to use it. There are Gym facilities but we never had the opportunity to use them.

Room Tip: I made the mistake of booking this direct through the hotel website and ended up paying full price...

Dear Reviewer, Thank you for taking the time to add your review, I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at what must have been a difficult time while attending a funeral. I appreciate your comment regarding the excellent breakfast buffet and quality of food at dinner and will pass these onto the Kitchen team. The bedroom televisions offer a wide selection of Freeview channels and as you point out we show all of the major sporting events in the first floor bar area. I hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

“Brilliant value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We stayed for one night on a Saturday on the winter saver rate which was fantastic value (just over £70 including breakfast). The deluxe double was spotlessly clean, and the large bed was very comfortable with good quality linen. Check in and out was quick, and receptionists warm and friendly. Breakfast was a buffet which had plenty of choice, albeit nothing out the ordinary, but something for everyone. Staff very pleasant throughout. Brilliant value overall, could not have asked for better for the price. Just stopped short of a five star review due to charges for Wifi - even if a discounted scheme is introduced, it is still behind my expectations of inclusive Wifi for residents - slightly behind modern life here. Nonetheless we had a great stay and will return. The car park contained some of the worst car parking we have ever seen - at least five spaces were unusable due to people parking over the lines, and someone had abandoned their car in one of the aisles! The hotel cannot be held responsible for this of course, it was just odd to see Middlesbrough's worst parkers all out en masse!

Room Tip: Views from the rooms on the right hand side of the corridor are the best, Miidlehaven, The Riverside...

Dear Reviewer, Thank you very much for providing feedback following your recent visit to the hotel. I am pleased that you found your bedroom to be spotless and comfortable and that there as a good choice at breakfast. I will pass on your kind comments regarding our team and in particular the receptionist. In defence of Middlesbrough, I have to point out that many of our guests are from outside the area and the poor parking may not be locals at all ! I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to Hotel soon.

“Thistle Hotel Middlesbrough - a weekend stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

My wife and I booked one night's stay, a Saturday night, at the Thistle Hotel, Middlesbrough. We found the hotel OK and on our arrival (around 2:45pm) were pleased to find that for security, the car park is barrier-controlled and plenty of open-air car parking was available but none in the hotel's covered parking area. Check in was faultless, the reception area was quiet and the lady at reception was helpful, friendly and efficient. We'd booked our stay online with one booking request - for a quiet room - and we were not disappointed. We were on the 8th floor in a warm and quiet standard double room with excellent views over the city. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. Other than breakfast the following morning, we did not use any of the hotel's other facilities.
We'd pre-booked breakfast for a cost of £10 per person (usually £15 per person - a bit steep!) and again, we were not disappointed. On arrival in the dining room, we were greeted courteously and shown to a table with instructions to help ourselves to the various buffets on offer and whilst there, tea and coffee were brought to our table. All in all, breakfast was a pleasant and leisurely experience, just as it should be on a Sunday morning!
A very enjoyable stay - thank you - we will be back!

“The best hotel stay I've had for some time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Middlesbrough, as a place, does not conjure up the best impression for most people. This, of course, is unfair and the hotel did it's part to put me at ease in the North East.
It was a business trip so after the usual long drive from Glasgow I was ready to relax before a day of meetings. Great meeting room facilities on the 8th floor (I think it was) with nice lounge area serving all the meeting rooms. Good attention from the meeting host.
Meetings over and I retired to the bar and restaurant. I do my research before I travel and I noted comments from other reviewers on price. Further research showed that the hotel is probably the only quality offering in the town. Rightly, or wrongly, I expect and accept that 4* brings a cost. Quality wise - the beer was fine and the food was absolutely brilliant. From my point of view, it was properly cooked and properly served. The right amount of guest interaction from the staff, which makes the experience more pleasurable.
My bedroom was excellent - a good size, a flat screen TV, the most comfortable bed I've had in a hotel in a long, long time. From my personal point of view it was too warm in the room but, in fairness, it was zero outside.
Breakfast - more excellent food (too much choice which just tempted me).
A nice send off from the receptionist.

Dear Reviewer, Thank you for placing your feedback on this site. It is not often enough that guests take the time and trouble to pass on their positive comments regarding their experience when visiting the hotel. I am delighted that we lived up to your expectations as a frequent hotel user and that you found the restaurant food to be brilliant with good service from our team. I note that you were attending a meeting in the hotel, we offer 17 meeting rooms and cater for events from 2 up to 350 people. I hope we have the opportunity to be of service when you next visit the Middlesbrough area and I would be happy to discuss our conference facilities in more detail if you would like to contact me, my email address is, damon.roberts@thistle.co.uk.
