“Hidden gem.”

We were going to Brixton Academy for a gig and needed a local (ish) hotel so we didn't have far to walk afterwards. We travelled down by train and got the tube. My partner was very worried as we walked through the local area from the tube station about what quality of hotel we would find ourselves in but she had a very nice surprise! The rooms were spotless, airy and light and the breakfasts were out of this world. It was good to stay in such a unique hotel and certainly beats Travel Tavern. A nice touch was the 'honesty box' for the bar, which means you can get yourself a drink from the bar at any time and leave a note to say what you had. We foolishly left a pair of boots behind in the room. I asked the hotel if they would post them on and charge my credit card for the postage. They did it straight away and free of charge. We were there for three nights and took full advantage of the local pubs, which are excellent.

“Camberwell 24 Carat Mexicana!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed here for one night at the start of our holiday and we were not disappointed. The hotel has a unique character and decor, the staff are friendly and helpful. There is an honesty bar within the breakfast area and you are able to borrow DVDs to watch in your room. Our room had a shared bathroom but this was not a problem as it was in a very quiet part of the hotel and there was a small washroom with sink in our room. The room was perfectly adequate, with television, writing desk and complimentary chocolate and water available. Breakfast was a little limited, a young lady offered us a boiled egg and some toast which was pleasant enough. The hotel is situated on quite a bustling street, with fine boozers! We enjoyed a great meal at The Tiger pub round the corner and even stayed for the quiz!

“Sharing that secret again...”

Two nights in my favourite London hotel. I work in theatre, so perhaps no surprise that the theatriclity of the place appeals to me, but a good night's sleep is the most important thing when there's concentrating work to be done, and I always get one here. I'm suprised to notice comments about noise from other reviewers. I'm a poor sleeper but have never noticed that - though I never travel without ear plugs and an eye mask.
A quiet room at the top and round the back; a comfortable bed; adjustable central heating; good shower; interesting clientele; fresh lilies in reception and the breakfast room; charming staff; Green & Blacks chocolate in room; honesty bar with good wine; a great tapas bar downstairs and a terrific gastro pub over the road. Being here makes me happy.
Did I mention the excellent reading material by the bed? What better gift can there be than a good book?

“A piece of Mexico in London”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for three nights and we found very attractive. The staff is courteous and the breakfast is wonderful. They offer night drinks at the breakfast area and the guests can help themselves and just write down the consumption, they say that "in guest we trust". Very friend attitude of then. The decor is absolutely Mexican, but with good taste. They offer, as courtesy, two chocolate bars, a small hot pepper chutney, along with the good quality bathroom complements. Although the location is not the most charming one in London, there is plenty of buses that can take you anywhere in town. You can find restaurants on the neighborhood but I strongly recommend the hotel restaurant, Angels & Gypsies, that you can ask the front desk to make reservations.

Room Tip: Rooms with bathroom (Ensuite) are more comfortable.

“Style over substance”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

If you like - or are not bothered by - a very small room (I note another comment that refers to 'spacious rooms' - ours definitely otherwise) and a revolting excess of tawdry religous imagery, and if you don't mind noise from downstairs until the early hours, then maybe this is the place for you. Certainly it is far from the standard chain hotel and, judging from the comments book, quite a lot of people like it. (Staff very friendly and the best towels I've experienced for a long time.) Breakfast was bizarre. The only eggs available are boiled (e.g. no facilities for scrambling) and are kept warm in an odd device that turns the yolk leathery while leaving the white undercooked. If you want black coffee you have to ask for it specially - 'coffee' is assumed to mean milky.
