“Think of cheap contractors’ accommodation.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

As someone who is used to travelling, both at home in the UK and abroad, I have to say that Jim’s Guest House (JGH) is probably the worst place I have ever stayed.

The staff are clinically professional and the location for Shepherd’s bush is very good but that is all the good I can say about it.

If you want cold impersonal accommodation, stay in a Formula 1, ETAP or Premier Inn. To me, a guest house should be a “home away from home” where there is clear evidence that someone really cares about their guests. The first indication of this should be the booking process. To phone up and be given the clear impression that you are a nuisance is not a good sign. However I was only staying for one night, so did as instructed and booked online.

If you are driving to the area forget easy, sensibly priced parking. This is not JGH’s fault but you should be aware of it.

External first impressions are of a well maintained property. Once through the door there is an overpowering unpleasant odour that pervades the entire building.

Checking in is carried out in the basement and then keys and directions to your room are provided. I can’t think of a guest house I have stayed in that the owners didn’t show me to my room!

The room I stayed in was a double ensuite. It lacked any character or signs of personal involvement. By evidence of screws and nails sticking out of walls, inoperative and loose electrical switches, dangling cables and general shoddy cheap decoration and maintenance it is clear there isn’t anyone within this business who cares about their guests.

The ensuite was tiny, had a extractor fan that was VERY noisy, and could only be accessed by a double hinged door with unpainted door stops.

The bed was clean but the linen and single pillow felt as if they came from a bargain pound shop.

Breakfast is served in a completely different building about 2 minutes walk. The menus are taped up onto the walls and diners are only allowed to choose one of the indicated menus. No variations allowed! My breakfast was cold and greasy with the sausage being raw in the middle. When this was pointed out to the cook he just shrugged his shoulders and ignored me.

At times I have stayed in, what I call “contactors’ digs”, that offer clean budget priced accommodation. JGH has pretention of being a small hotel but falls well below the standards; instead it is more akin to very poor quality but high priced contractors’ digs.

Shop around for other accommodation and avoid this one.

“A great London guest house - close to BBC TV centre - recommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Myself and a friend have just stayed at Jim's when attending a show at BBC TV studios, and we were both very impressed. The rooms were very clean, with tea/coffee, sattelite TV, and wi-fi available if you need it, and the beds were extremely comfortable.

We were highly impressed with the customer service shown to us by all Jim's staff, from the booking, to the breakfast service, (better than you get from most of the chain hotels, at far less cost!). We had to be at the studios quite early, so needed to book into our room before their usual booking in time, but they were really helpful, and had our room ready for us early.

Jim's has 2 properties in the same road (no. 26 and no 3 Aldine Street), we were in number 3, which is newly fitted out to a good standard. I can't comment on the rooms in no. 26 but going on the overall care taken by them, I would imagine that is just as good.

The breakfast room is in number 3, and was fine (the only minor criticism was that the coffee at breakfast was very weak, but you can always make your own in the room), there is self-serve tea, coffee, juice and cereals, plus a choice of cooked breakfasts. One nice touch was that the kitchen was open-plan to the breakfast room, so you can watch them cooking and see how clean it is.

The room price was very good, and the location excellent for us. Jim's is a 5 minute walk from Shepherd's Bush tube, and 10 minute walk to BBC TV centre.

It's an affordable, clean, comfy, friendly London guest house, and we would definitely stay there again. Particularly recommended if you are going to the BBC!

“Better than expected”

Stayed for one night in a triple room (no 14) in their sister building across the road which is where you go to have breakfast. After reading the reviews i was a bit worried as to what we had let ourselves in for, but it was a good price in a good location for where we were going. When we arrived our first impression was that it is an average looking bb and that is exactly what it is and anyone expecting more should pay the extra and stay in a hotel. We travel to London quite often and always stay in budget accomadation near to where we are going and found that Jim's guesthouse is one of the better places we have stayed, There are no negative points that i can say apart from the ensuite was very small but for us it was not a problem and served its purpose. On the positive side the room was very clean as was the rest of the areas that we saw like the check-in area where we were greated by a very friendly and helpfull couple who gave us lots of information about the area travel shopping parking ect. At breakfast again the staff were very friendly and helpfull, the breakfast room was very clean and the breakfast very nice.
Maybe we were lucky with our room or maybe improvements have been made since some of the negative reviews were posted but we found everything to be great, with the huge westfield shopping centre less than 2 mins walk and tube about 5 mins away then central London less than 15 mins away its a good loction and would have no problem staying here again.

“Overpriced !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2011

We booked one night only thank goodness. The room smelt and looked shabby. The shower was in the tiniest cubicle that you couldn't raise your hands to wash your hair without hitting your arms on the shower door, and nowhere to put your toiletries. I unplugged the kettle to plug my hairdryer in and the tv went off and the on/off switch wouldn't switch back on. The bed only had one small pillow each. The breakfast was of poor quality. Having stayed in several B&B's in London I found this one at £72 a night expensive for the service provided. Also you have to pay in full for all the nights you propose to stay as opposed to paying a deposit and then deciding after the first night............it's not a nice place to stay and leave.

“experiencing life.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2011

We stayed here in July of 2009 for a week. I was travelling with my 3 teen aged sons. The location and the economical price was our choice for staying here. The staff was friendly and helpful. Eager to please and gave us directions and laundry soap!! One of the boys was ill for a couple of days and the staff were very concerned and brought food to our room for him. Life is what you make it and the hosts at the B&B were caring and kept the rooms clean and we felt welcomed. There are some who would say they expect to be treated like royalty when you pay for a nights stay. Life is for experiencing, it is all about how we choose to interpret the world. I loved the color and excitement of London, and at the guest house I felt I was living the life, away from home, safe and secure.
