As someone who is used to travelling, both at home in the UK and abroad, I have to say that Jim’s Guest House (JGH) is probably the worst place I have ever stayed.
The staff are clinically professional and the location for Shepherd’s bush is very good but that is all the good I can say about it.
If you want cold impersonal accommodation, stay in a Formula 1, ETAP or Premier Inn. To me, a guest house should be a “home away from home” where there is clear evidence that someone really cares about their guests. The first indication of this should be the booking process. To phone up and be given the clear impression that you are a nuisance is not a good sign. However I was only staying for one night, so did as instructed and booked online.
If you are driving to the area forget easy, sensibly priced parking. This is not JGH’s fault but you should be aware of it.
External first impressions are of a well maintained property. Once through the door there is an overpowering unpleasant odour that pervades the entire building.
Checking in is carried out in the basement and then keys and directions to your room are provided. I can’t think of a guest house I have stayed in that the owners didn’t show me to my room!
The room I stayed in was a double ensuite. It lacked any character or signs of personal involvement. By evidence of screws and nails sticking out of walls, inoperative and loose electrical switches, dangling cables and general shoddy cheap decoration and maintenance it is clear there isn’t anyone within this business who cares about their guests.
The ensuite was tiny, had a extractor fan that was VERY noisy, and could only be accessed by a double hinged door with unpainted door stops.
The bed was clean but the linen and single pillow felt as if they came from a bargain pound shop.
Breakfast is served in a completely different building about 2 minutes walk. The menus are taped up onto the walls and diners are only allowed to choose one of the indicated menus. No variations allowed! My breakfast was cold and greasy with the sausage being raw in the middle. When this was pointed out to the cook he just shrugged his shoulders and ignored me.
At times I have stayed in, what I call “contactors’ digs”, that offer clean budget priced accommodation. JGH has pretention of being a small hotel but falls well below the standards; instead it is more akin to very poor quality but high priced contractors’ digs.
Shop around for other accommodation and avoid this one.
