“Just don't stay there”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

I stayed in this hotel (room 4) on 4th October. I often visit London to see shows, and I have to say this is the WORST hotel I have stayed in. I was supposed to stay in the Abbey Court Hotel just down the road, but on arrival was told there was some "problem" about my room, and I was transferred to their "sister" hotel the Normandie. My room had a double bed and a single, so no room to put luggage. The carpet was filthy as were the curtains. After searching for the "tea making facilities" I went to reception to enqire. The receptionist seemed astounded that I would expect this, and disappeared for several minutes before producing a cup and T bags and milk. The first kettle didn't work, but the second one did. On the plus side, the sheets/towels were clean, and the cooked breakfast was adequate. As for the furniture...the bedside cupboards were very old, and both had one of their knobs missing, just a nail sticking out where originally a knob had been. The wardrobe had the same problem....no sign of "Health & Safety" in that hotel.

Room Tip: Just Don't stay there

I am afraid I was on holiday on 4th October so was unable to deal with your complaints personally.

My staff felt obliged to give you a very large triple room since you were reloctaed from another hotel even though you had paid for a single room.

The standard at the Normandie is the same as the Abbey Court apart from tea making facilites. Tea making facilities are only available on request.

The carpets were steam cleaned in the spring and the curtains were dry cleaned.

Apparently the previous guest had removed the knobs on the bedside table and the wardrobe.

Breakfast is freshly cooked while the guests are drinking their juice and tea or coffee and is limitless. Most people refer to it as "awesome " or "delicious".

I apologise sincerely if you were not more than happy with the hotel and would gladly discuss anything further with you personally. I am here every Monday and Friday between 7am and 12pm and three other mornings.

“bed bugs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

I stayed at this hotel a few months ago and I will never stay again, I should of smelled a rat straight away after seeing rat catchers under the dressing table, but I thought I'm only here a few days and it's cheap, what should I expect. I stayed one night after being bit all over my body, of which I still have marks, when I brought this up with the owner he questioned where I had stayed previously, implying I had brought the problem in, although admitting pest control was ongoing, I have stayed in many hotels in paddington over the years and this is truly the worst, avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: Don't Do It

The box under the dressing table is a legal requirement for all hotels, as is pest control.

The room was checked and found no sign of insects of any kind.

The rooms are hoovered throughly every day and we have a very strict hygiene and cleaning regime.

I am disappointed that you were not completely satisfied with the room.

“Desperately needs attention”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

I have just stayed 5 nights at the Normandie Hotel . We booked a triple room. The room could just accommodate 2 people but was far too small to accommodate 3. There was nowhere to store 1 suitcase let alone 3. Our room was not made up at all on the 2nd day we were there. On the 3rd day we only received 2 towels, not 3. On telling staff at reception it took them ONE HOUR on each occasion for them to bring us clean towels. No lights worked at the reception room toilet. I told management. 4 days later there were still no lights. I asked to use the phone to make an urgent call. I was refused and sent to another hotel down the road to make the call. The room was shabby. The bedspread had holes , carpet was worn, furniture was old with little varnish remaining. Curtains were falling off the rod. On the bright side, the staff serving breakfast were nice. Location is good-near transport and Hyde Park, but then there are many other hotels in Paddington offering ,for the same price, better service, accommodation and care. I suggest that the owner of this hotel train her staff and put some money back into refurbishing her asset because she will not be receiving return business. I will be returning to Paddington next year but I will certainly not be returning to the Normandie Hotel.

The room is a triple and is generally booked to 3 people with 3 suitcases. We felt that you were sleeping all day on the second day and did not want disturb you. The cleaning staff leave at 1 pm and you were still in the room. There are always 3 towels in the triple rooms but we provide extra towel on request.
The carpets are not at all worn and the whole hotel was refurbished last January and the rooms are not old neither are the bed spreads.
The curtains were not falling off the rail before you checked in.

We don't have a reception room toilet so I cannot comment on a non-existent toilet.

“Bed bugs experience”

After my first night I thought that I had been bitten by insects. During the day the bites developed into yellow blisters which eventually began to weep. I looked horrible - my one yes was almost closed. The second night I got up at 4 o'clock in the night due to the bites. I had a look in the mirror and decided to go for medical help. I went to the reception which is supposed to be about open around the clock. A piece of paper placed on the door said, " Will be back in 15 minutes" - i woder when the 15 minutes had begun. I went back to my room. Then I thought that this couldn¨t be right so i went back to the reception and knocked intensely on the door. It turned out that the receptionist had been sleeping. Aftewards i went to the hospital nearby where they confirmed my worst assumptions - I had been exposed to an attack by bedbugs. The doctors even gave me a letter to show at the hotel. At the hotel they did not accept the cause of my terrible looks. They had never had aný problems, and I must have been bitten outside the hotel. They refused to pay back the rent. After I returned back to Denmark I went to the doctor and was immediately sent to hospital. There was no doubt. Bed bugs. I have tried to contact the hotel, but they deny everything - and send me articles from the internet saying that the bite marks might come from outside the hotel. At the hospital there was no doubt. I can only recommend that YOU STAY AWAY FROM NORMANDIE HOTEL.

Room Tip: I lived in room 4

A I explained to you on the telephone I called the pest control company as soon as you told me that you had insect bites. You were still here when they arrived.

On examining the room they confirmed that there was no sign of insects in the room. If there had been I would have gladly refunded the mony paid to me.

“Tired decor but OK if cheap”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2011

I was tranferred to the Normandie Hotel from the nearby Gresham Hotel due to overbooking. The room (booked as a single but laid out as a twin) was adequate for a single but would have been extremely snug for two. Everything pretty clean, and there'd been some reasonably recent refurbishment of the bathroom (decent shower head, retiled) but the room was generally pretty tired and in need of some TLC.

My main issue was the road noise, my room was on the 2nd floor at the front of the hotel and I slept very poorly due to bus/road noise, so a room at the rear would have been much better.

In summary, probably OK for a very short stay if you can get it cheap - mainly due to good proximity to Paddington station and tube.

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the road noise but we are lucky that we have a private slip road and a garden between the hotel and the main road. I am surprised that you felt the room was pretty tired as the whole hotel was refurbished in January 2011, and is generally referred to as "very tastefully decorated".
