“VERY interesting place to stay (and not in a good way)”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

Oh where to begin??? Let's start with the bad since it's the easiest :)

1. The lift is tiny (hope you can get you and your luggage in it all at once).
2. No wash/face clothes ladies; hope you have an old tee shirt to cut up and use to wash your face (luckily my husband had one).
3. The hot water isn't hot; it's lukewarm.
4. Internet? What internet? It cuts in and out CONSTANTLY. We stayed 4 days and could not wait to get to a hotel with reliable internet. VERY frustrating.
5. The dryer does not work in the washing machine. Oh, and good luck figuring out HOW to open the machine. You can't just open it. You have to finagle it.
6. You can literally feel the mattress springs on your back. No cushion here; feels like sleeping on a board.
7. The maintenance man knocked on my door wanting to install a new microwave! You have GOT to be kidding me! There is signage clearly posted in the room stating the hotel isn't responsible for your belongings so do you seriously think I am going to let you in my room with my belongings and have me leave? Unbelievable! So, you know what he did? He left the box in my room to sit for two more days until we checked out. The box was the size of a minifridge, I kid you not.
8. The toilet had a butt-sprayer....gross.
9. Have fun figuring out the in-wall monitor system to call the front desk.
10. They need an operating manual posted for the in-wall monitor system and how to open the washer/dryer. WHAT a PAIN! Both my husband and I could NOT get it open. My husband noticed it appeared it had been finagled with a lot (meaning other people could not open it either).

The good:

1. Nearby shopping and Saturday market.
2. Nearby underground.
3. Third floor rooms were roomy and nicely decorated.
4. Walls are soundproof; never heard other people.
5. We didn't have to bring our own toilet paper; they had some there.
6. Our room had a floor fan.
7. Staff was pleasant.
8. Three large windows were pleasant for fresh air and natural lighting.
9. Nice TV.
10. Very clean.

Room Tip: Stay in a larger room on the third floor.

“Bargain Travel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2006

We spent the weekend in London and decided to cram as much sightseeing into 3 days as possible. Therefore the room we rented was only meant for recharging before hitting the sights. The Travel House was definitely affordable by british standards, we did get the room set-up requested (3 twin beds), and the bathroom was in the room (ensuite). The room offered a kitchen sink, tea pot, and refrigerator. On the down side, the bathroom was so small we took pictures and broke into hysterical laughter each morning when trying to do the simpliest things, like brushing your teeth with the door shut which almost required the skill of a contortionist. The beds were terribly hard, so much so, that we had to fold the bedspread (more like a piece of fabric) to try and pad the surface. One big plus was the location, about 100 feet to the Notting Hill Metro, which made jaunting about very convienent. If I were travelling again and cost was an issue I would stay at the Travel House again, but if comfort was first, I'd look elsewhere.

“Loved It!”

We stayed at the Travel House in Notting Hill for 3 nights.

The hotel room was very clean and had a lil fridge and kettle. The hotel is very convenient for those who would be taking the tube around london. notting hill gate is only 10 seconds away! very convenient!

The hotel staff were helpful but not overly spectacular.

Overall we enjoyed our experience and we tried to book there again when we went through england but, they were booked.

I recommend this hotel.

“Good location but not all it seems!”

My husband and I spent 7 nights at this Hotel in April 2006. We had a large room (with tiny en-suite) on the 3rd floor and whilst it contained a good-sized fridge, microwave, sink and oven - it was difficult to use the cooking facilities as absolutely no utensils, crockery, pots/pans or cutlery is provided. The new oven wasn't even connected!!!!! The shared kitchenettes on other floors were also bare of cooking utensils and had obviously not been cleaned. When I enquired at Reception about pots/pans I was directed to borrow from the kitchenette in the basement, but the few old pans lying around hadn't been cleaned from previous users and there was not a cleaning product to be seen anywhere. On 2 of the nights we were kept awake by a large group of students partying between rooms until 2:00 a.m. On the 2nd night my husband could stand no more and went down to the night-duty receptionist demanding something be done. His response was "what can I do?" At my husband's suggestion their supervisor/teacher was summoned (he somewhat surprisingly was in a room several floors below!!!!) At least he settled the students and arranged an apology from them the next day. Mid-way through our week the smoke-detector in our room started beeping indicating a new battery was needed - it took 2 attempts to get the staff to fix this problem (their solution? Remove the battery!!!!). We could hear the smoke-detector's battery in the shared kitchenette on our floor also beeping and when we left it had still not been attended to. The good points about this Hotel are the large and surprisingly clean rooms, location to Notting Hill tube and the room price. Just don't believe all that the Hotel supposedly offers.

“Nice location, bad hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2006

After staying ath this hotel I was surprised that some people actually liked staying here and it was disappointing as I chose this hotel on their reviews. Good points: we had the basement room that was very quiet and overlooked their shabby garden. Not sure why they advertise it as a feature as you can't use it anyway. We had the room with kitchenette so we had a cooker and a fridge so it was very spacious. I did look at the other rooms and they were small. Bad points: because we had one of the better rooms the manager was constantly showing people our room even when we were in it and even while were trying to sleep in! My boyfriend was having a shower during one viewing and I had to physically stop people from going into the bathroom. The beds were really bad and you could feel every spring in the beds. I tried to find an iron and they said they didn't have any and didn't seem to care even though they had laundry. The teabags and coffee were never replenished and we ended up buying our own. The toilet seat never stayed on and we we never had any toilet paper. I asked for some at one stage and got half a roll obvioulsy out of someone else's room. As a few people have said, the location next to Notting Hill was the olny good point!
