“Not as bad as some reviews make out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

Had 2 rooms to accommodate the family. Rooms clean and modern with tasteful decor. No noise issues.
5 minutes or so walk from 3 tube stations.
Wetherspoons around the corner great for breakfast.
No problem with walking down the 'dark alley' over reviewers had mentioned, you are only in it for 30 seconds and it is well lit with quite a bit of traffic passing through and a 24hour car wash at either end.
Only problem was hot water at about 6pm but available at other times.
For what I paid, it was very good.

“AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!”

Myself and a friend has allways stayed in a travel lodge in london. So we didnt think we would have a problem at this one.Once arriving the hotel looked clean and the lady on the reception was nice.Got to our room on the first floor facing the road which i was glad as at the back of the building is a railway line..was i wrong!next to our room was a noisy 24 hour carwash!our room was basic, but HUMAN BLOOD stains on the curtains and stains on walls and carpet!they gave us a old heater which could of blew up but straightaway a member of staff got us a new heater! My friend ended up having a cold shower and the room was cold even with a heater so we asked if we could have another room and was told the hotel was full(we did not see anyone). So we had three hours sleep and checked out at 7 in the morning and it ended up ruining our trip to london and ended up having to pay extra to get home early. The only good bit of this hotel was the girl on the reception and the bed and tv..Dont ask to see a manager as so one seems to be inchange!

Room Tip: avoid room 104!

“Not the best Travelodge I've ever stayed at....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I had a single room on the ground floor. This meant going through a door and then another into an alley way before entering the hotel again. The room was what you expect from a Travelodge - bed, TV, bathroom. The shower was pretty good and nice and hot. There were staff on the reception all the time (I checked in very late - close to midnight) and served beer until late. Although good points I would still stay away. The room was freezing and the heater in there was loud and so couldn't be left on if I had any hope of sleep. It also sparked a little when I removed it from the socket! It is also down a slightly odd alley so if I was you I'd stay at the Aldgate Travelodge which is only 2 minutes away from Aldgate tube rather than the Aldgate East Travelodge.

Room Tip: Ask to not be in rooms 1-5 (though the door and the alley way) and ask not to be on the ground floor...

“Great place to stay!”

Great place to stay in London. Room clean and comfortable. Bed very comfy so slept like a dream. Staff very helpful and the free Wi Fi in the reception an added bonus. Good location for getting around London. The near bye Red Chilli Indian restaurant over the road is good too. Good Travelodge, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Was in room 416 and it was very quiet!

“Great place to stay - no major complaints!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I stayed at this property from the 9th - 22nd January 2012. At the time of booking it was the only hotel that had a tv & ensuite in the bedroom & that was situated within short walking distance from a zone 1 tube station in my price range & so even though I had seen a number of negative reviews on it I still decided to take the chance & so I booked.

As I continued to read reviews up until my arrival I was a little nervous considering just how negative many of them were. I was considering cancelling my room there due to this but didn't want to lose the money. I am so glad that I didn't cancel! :)

I booked my room online for 32 pounds a night (great deal!) & then called the hotel to confirm. I arrived on the 9th of January in a shuttle transfer bus from Heathrow Airport...I have to say that the bus driver simply had no clue where the hotel was & it wasn't showing up on the GPS but as I had an idea of the area I told him to drive by the other travelodge (Tower Hill...it is literally 5 min walk from Aldgate East travelodge)...we went in & got directions & then it was smooth from there.

At reception I was greeted by an exceptionally friendly young man at the desk who efficiently checked me in & asked me if I needed any help with anything. He said to always let reception know if I needed a taxi or a theatre ticket or directions etc...they were more than willing to help. Reception area is clean & has leather couches. There is also free water in reception to freshen up with after a long journey.

I was given room number 416 (facing apartments on the Chamber Street road side not the Railways tracks). I had asked for a top floor room that was relatively quiet & this is what I got. When the window is closed you can't hear a thing. When the window is open however I could hear the trains from behind the hotel but this was nothing major. Could also hear cars & sirens but again...not to a large extent. I imagine rooms on the railway track side would be slightly noisier but again...I can't imagine this would be too difficult to get over if you are tired enough.

The room was heated to a wonderful degree. I was able to sleep comfortable in the room with just the one blanket on. The lighting in the room was excellent. I was dissapointed to see that there was just a shower but no bath but considering that I was paying such a small amount this did not bother me. The bathroom is a reasonable size. The shower I have to say wasn't the hottest...the water pressure was good however. Whilst they do not provide toiletries they do provide a small bar of soap in the bathroom which is good.

There is a cupboard & large desk & chair in the room as well as a fan. The tv was very clear...had the basic channels you would expect.

The Bed itself - Clean and comfortable...the pillows were good too so I don't understand why people complain about them. I was given 4 pillows!

The Cleaners - All the cleaners that I came into contact with were friendly. I will say that none of them had particularly good english skills & even though I did once request they not enter my room, I did come home that day to find the sheets had been changed but again...not a huge issue. Their language skills weren't 100% but they were friendly & efficient.

The hotel itself: The hallways are rather narrow so if you try to get through the hallway with a large bag whilst the cleaners are there - forget it... I quickly found that out after the first attempt. The hotel in general is quite clean & friendly looking though.

The staff throughout the 2 weeks there were all smiley & friendly....received great service & had a good joke or two with them.

The Area: I am a single female traveller from Australia who is only 20 yrs old...after reading the reviews about Chamber Street...again, I was nervous. But guess what? I walked through those arches & under the tunnel almost every night that I was there well after 10pm each time & I felt 100% safe & wasn't scared at all. There are car washes all along the arches & the men in there are always smiley & friendly & would give me a wave at night to let me know it was all ok. If you have seen EastEnders...just think of Phil's place & the Arches...it's like that. Wasn't scared at all.

The hotel is within 5-10 min walking distance from both Aldgate East station & Tower Hill station & there are 4 lines (district, circle, hammersmith & city, metropolitan) that run from these stations so that you have easy access to the centre of London. Again, very simple to get to the stations.

There is a Tesco less than 5 min walk from the hotel. There is a Waitrose about 10 min walk from the hotel. On Whitechapel High St (5 mins walk from hotel....next to Aldgate East station) there is an Internet Cafe (exit Aldgate East station via Whitechapel Gallery Exit) that charges 50p for 30 mins which is quite good value. There is also a pub, KFC, Burger King & Costa Coffee next to the station.

In Leman street (next to Chamber St) there are 2 Indian Restaurants, a Lebanese Restaurant, a Pub (The Brown Bear), a Bar further up the street (The Oliver Conquest) & a little Fried Chicken/Kebab takeaway shop that sells a huge Cod & Chips for 4 pounds - great value!

I can't say that I ate at all in the restaurant of the hotel so I cannot review that but unless you really want to eat in the hotel I would say go elsewhere as there is plenty about.

The hotel does lock the front door at 10pm but you can enter by putting your room card in the door. Very simple & safe.

As this is the East End...I recommend visiting Commercial Road (which is 10-15 min walk from the hotel)....it is full of Indian/Pakistani & Arab restaurants & shops. I loved it.

I would not hesitate to stay here again & I am sure that I will on my next trip to London. I can't understand the complaints of some reviewers here. I understand if you are paying a lot of money at the last minute that you might be dissapointed with it but seriously...it's great value for London.

Personally, I actually have stayed at the Ritz & I have to say...for what you pay here...it's fantastic value!

Room Tip: 416....request for a room that does not face the rail tracks
