We stayed here for just a Saturday night at the end of January. We got a really good deal through Travelzoo which we booked quite a few months in advance. We arrived just before midday and were able to check in to our room immediately, which was welcome as it gave us chance to freshen up and grab a hot drink in the room. The hotel is really modern and everything looks fresh rather than tired. The public spaces such as the corridors are styled just as well as the room. When we returned from our day out and about we discovered that the small fridge in the room didn't work. They sent someone up, but they couldn't fix it, so we asked if we could move rooms to one that had a working fridge (I like my drinks cold!). They checked with management and within 5 minutes we had the key to another room. This must have been an upgrade as the second room was on the 5th floor and had a seperate sofa and tv area. The bathroom was still the same size as the standard room, but the bed was possibly bigger.
The bed was big and comfortable(two pushed together but with a good quality topper so you didn't feel the gap) with good pillows that were neither too thick nor too stiff. The Elemis bath products were a nice touch, and the tea/coffee facilties had a good choice including hot chocolate and decent biscuits. What I really liked was the free DVD rental service they offered, with quite a wide range of DVDs available including recent releases - it seemed like a nice touch, particularly for business travellers. You just need to call reception and leave a deposit to borrow one for the night.
The area is quiet at the weekend, as commented by others, but I like the calmness of it. There's plenty to see in the area with Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Borough market, the Design museum, Whitechapel gallery, St Katherine's dock and Spitalfields being in easy walking distance. A little further and you'll get to the Tate Modern and St Paul's. The tube is just a 2/3 minute walk away. There were plenty of places to eat locally, although a lot of them seemed to shut up shop for the weekend. For a cheap drink whetherspoons is literally next door. We didn't eat or drink in the hotel.
My one complaint would be that the windows are locked and you have to call maintenence to get someone to unlock them. I like fresh air in a room. Would also agree with others that the rooms lack natural light - both rooms we were in had quite small windows.
