“Refurbished to high standard and very convenient for Eurostar and trips in London”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed here overnight before a trip on Eurostar. Hotel recently refurbished to a high standard. We had a room on first floor overlooking a small park. It was well presented, had a very comfortable bed and also a good sized shower in the small ensuite. Room also had a good sized flat screen TV.
Location is great for both St Pancreas for Eurostar trips and also close to Kings Cross for mainline and underground connections. Both just 3 minutes walk away.
Hotel located away from main road traffic and noise

Staff were very helpful
We would certainly use this hotel again for an overnight stay

Room Tip: Our room overlooking the park was a good choice for us

“horrible hotel..spend your money elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The only good thing i can say about his hotel is that it's located on a fairly nice looking square close to St Pancras.

Now for the bad part. Upon arrival we had to look for our name amongst a list of guests because the guy at the reception couldnt find us. We were told our name wasnt on the list, even though we had a print of the booking.com reservation with us. At first he offered us two single rooms for the price, which we refused because we are a couple. Then, another employee (both werent very fluent in english) took us to another hotel down the road. I dont even remember the name, but this place was horrible! It looked like a construction site as renovations were obiously going on. They showed us two rooms which we both refused because they were awful looking, the bathroom door looked like a rat had eaten part of it and the "bathroom" had mould. We refused both rooms and told the Melville employee that we would just look for another hotel. He invited us back into the Melville and all of a sudden they DID have a double room available. They told us another couple who arrived later would have to move. We felt sorry for them but took the room at the Melville as it was late in the evening. The room we got was renovated but in cheap way. It was the tiniest hotel room we'd ever seen. The shower was really small but worst of all we couldnt stretch our legs in the bed and we are no giants. We had a really bad night because of the cheap bed, the noise coming from the other rooms and the street noise. After showering we realised there was no hair dryer, the reception offered us one but it looked like a toy and broke down after two seconds. We checked out after one night, stating our complaints to another employee at the reception. Apparently there had been a mix up the night before with a dutch couple who cancelled. The employee refused to give us a refund for the second night, because we had booked non refundable. Still, we walked out the door and slept like a rose at the Premier Inn the next night. I know this is a budget hotel, but for 73 euro a night i expect something decent. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more and DO NOT STAY HERE.

Dear Guest

thanks for your e mail and your comments . We use tripadivsor as a barmeter of how we are peforming at any one time. We are striving for a level of solid condsistency where all our patrons are happy .

Apolgies for any confusion : I do believe even though you had your booking confirmation with you ; you did not present this at check in and then proceeded to fill in the guest registration card with the name of your partner which was not the name you had initlally booked the room with. If you had either presented the booking form with refence number number or simply filled in the registration card with the correct name ; then this would have solved any issues, and you would have been given the room you had booked immediately without fuss or delay.

All the rooms have been renovated BUT certainly not in a cheap way. We have spent on average £15,000 per bedroom .You can see this from our pictures. The beds are all hand made locally in Camden and all mattresses are orthopaedic. These are all good quality products even compared to a 5 star hotel who charge 5 times more than we do.

The hairdryer and hair straightener are travel size and are kept in our recpetion to avoid theft; each room is allocated its own.

We know we will not meet everyone taste or expectaion : We are a Modern Budget hotel located in Central London. For 73 Euros you got a brand new double room with en suite bathroom unlimirted Wifi and all you can eat breakfast and tax . An excellent deal in a city like London.

Thank you for your time taken

“Hideous!”

Initially arriving at the hotel, the reception looked modern and clean. We had to leave baggage as we were too early to check-in. Therefore the man working on the desk took us through to a room in the back of the hotel. Anyone could get to this room as the room was unlocked and no tags were issued with the bags to say which bags belonged to us. My first impressions of the room were fairly good, very small room but do-able. There was a large mirror, however, it was 6 foot up the wall therefore being 5'6 i could not use the mirror. The major problems happened at night time. We stayed for two nights from New Years eve so expected some noise as people would obviously be out celebrating into early hours. However, the noise ran throughout the night and the walls were extremely thin (presumably plaster walls due to the design of the old house) we could hear every step taken up the stairs through the night. Also, every so often there would be this tremendous sound of water flooding which sounded like it was in our room. I rushed to turn the light on, only to realise it was probably in the wall pipes. However, it was extremely loud and quite frightening, waking me up every time someone went to the toilet above us. On the second night, the noise from other guests was very loud. (Around 4am for a couple of hours)There was shouting, howling, singing, laughing, music, knocking on doors from one large group of foreign boys.(the guests making the noise kept moving about through the halls and the stairway and outside our room where it sounded like they were in our room). I went downstairs to see if there was any staff to complain to at 5am. However, there was no one around to talk to and I had no sleep, for the second night. In the morning we went to the desk to check out and my partner mentioned the room opposite were extremely loud and we had no sleep. The man on the desk was watching football on his computer and he simply said ' well you should have come downstairs' and we counter- argued that we did and there was no one there to complain to. He just shook his head and left us to make our own way out after leaving our suitcases in the unlocked room. The service was very low for a hotel and I advise anyone to think again when booking this hotel. I payed a considerable amount of money for two nights of no sleep and a lack of care and enthusiasm for the guests. I was extremely angry at the hotel for not doing anything about the noise for two nights on the run and for not acknowledging an apology was needed for ruining an anniversary for my partner and I. The only plus point to this hotel was its location which was outside kings Cross station, however I was deeply upset and tired after spending two nights at this hotel that my trip wasn’t enjoyed as much as it should have been.

Dear Guest

Thanks for your review which i have now read and letting us know your thoughts. All feedback is important. We alsways act swiftly and we learn from any mistaked we have made.

Firstly i would like to say the title your review needs to change from Hideous to noisy ! The title really bears no bearing on the review ; hideous would imply ugly and not nicelyt decorated or maintained. We have spent £1 million on a large refurbsihment project and you can see this stright away form when you enter the hotel from our reception and your room.

Secondly and importantly please accept my apologise for the niose disturbance on New Years Eve. Im my opinion everyone drinks too much and acts foolishly . It is ver yhard to tell young men to calm down when they have had far to much alcohol. It is the busiest night of the year for the police and the ambulance services.

There was really nothing we could do apart from asking guests to respect the hotel and other patrons in the hotel. This is more an issue about the behaviour of young people today than anything else. I wonder how the emergency services deal with it ??

Again thanks for your e mail and rest assured we are working hard to make things perfect.

“The best things come in small packages...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

We also booked the Albion House Hotel but were put in the Melville...and after staying in the Albion the week before, the Melville was even better. The rooms are small but in my opinion well designed and very pleasant. The bed was SO comfortable, the only difficulty getting out of it for work in the morning. The room I was in was modern, a new and clean bathroom and the staff were friendly and helpful. You do have to go over the road for breakfast and I have had nicer hotel breakfasts, but it isn't awful...the nutella definitely giving them brownie points....and again the staff were lovely. For the price, I don't really think you can grumble.

“Awfull Hotel”

WARNING DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL..Stayed for two nights at this hotel 23/24 Nov 2011. Booked the Albion house hotel but when checked in which was at the melville we were given a room at the melville. The room was located in what looked like the baggage hold area of the hotel. When I entered the room it felt very dark and dingy and the floor wasn.t level it sloped down in the corner where the bed was so couldn't get a good sleep as kept rolling into the corner. The bathroom was tiny and tiles were missing you had to have the door open to use the toilet and when you used the so called shower which there was no hook for the shower head (appalling) the whole bathroom got covered in water, sink was a tiny hand basin which didn't even have a plug to get a sink of water. There was no bin in the room or bathroom . Only one cup for tea and coffee facilitys for a double room. Breakfast was terrible had to go over the road to albion house for breakfast which only consisted of cornflakes, horrible ham and cheese and toast which took nearly all day to brown. Had to cue up for breakfast only 5 tables to searve 3 hotels and had to sit next to people out of another room. For £100 a night this hotel hasn't even got simple basic ammenities a hostle would have been better.DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL

Dear Sir

We apologise for any inconveneince caused.

We have undergone extensive refurbsishemt to the hotel and our bedrooms. We only have one room which is yet to be refurbsished , Room 45. This room will be completed in the new year. Unfortuneately you had stayed in this room. We realise it is of course not up to the standard as the rest of the hotel and our new rooms. We did offer you a discount and we did inform you via e mail about this before your arrival. We did not receive a reply to our e mail....

Once again we apologise for any incovenience. We like to have total transparency to all our guests which is why we are informing you of the room number.

Thanks for your time taken to review us
