“1920's Glamour in Belgravia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2010

I stayed at the Ormonde with a friend as we were attending a party in central London. It was competitively priced and I wanted to stay in an independent hotel rather than a faceless chain. The hotel is a beautiful building just off Sloane Square in Belgravia and has been lovingly dedicated to the 1920's, with chandeliers and beautiful furniture. Our room was on the 4th floor, reached through a period lift or a lot of stairs, and was full of antiques with a chandelier light. Despite the room overlooking the road, there was not much noise and our only complaint was how hot the room was - I suspect this would have been true of every property in central london during this last weekend. I would certainly stay at this hotel again, we felt that we had stumbled across a secret and were very looked after.

“Terrible Booking Experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

I was looking for a moderately-priced hotel a few months ago for my family to stay in when they came for a week to visit me in July. This is a great booking- 2 rooms at 7 nights each- any hotel would want this. I was still living in Battersea at this time so I wanted to find a place near Sloane Square and I have to say, this place does have an excellent location. I went IN PERSON in MARCH to speak with the hotel manager (Alan) to check out the hotel and make the booking. I was so impressed by the location and the downstairs facilities seemed to be just fine, so I went ahead with the booking and had my parents call him from the USA literally the same day to confirm the reservation with their credit card details. He did, however, tell me at the time of my visit that all the rooms were currently occupied and therefore I would be unable to see them. I found this a bit strange but let it slide.

I guess I would have thought that going in person, plus having my parents call immediately after, plus the fact that this all occurred several months in advance would be more than enough to ensure a reservation. Thankfully, my mother had the foresight to email them using the email address listed on their website to confirm the reservation about a week before arrival. After receiving no response for several days, she asked me to ring them to see what was going on. I did this and even though I was speaking directly to Alan, he asked me to spell my last name at least 5 times then asked if the reservation was for 1 night, etc. Basically just pretended he has no idea what I was talking about. Then, he told me he would check with his colleagues and call be back, and asked me to give him my mobile number. Then, as I started to do this, he finished the number for me and then admitted than he had my contact details written down and had remembered speaking to my mother. And even insisted they had a "lovely" conversation! So I told him that he needed to call me back within the hour or I would assume our reservation was null and void. To his credit, he did call me back rather promptly and said that his "colleague had erased the reservation and written in someone else instead." WHAT?!?!? I just don't even know what to think about a hotel that literally pencils in someone's reservation for 2 rooms for 7 nights made months in advance and then just scratches it out whenever convenient for them.

Luckily, I have since moved to Kensington and have found a significantly nicer place much nearer to my current location for my family to stay. It is beyond pathetic and frustrating that I have had to do all of this within only a few days' notice of their arrival, when I went to such lengths to ensure this was handled months ago. What a huge let-down.. Don't let this happen to you!!

“disgusting room-worst ever stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2010

Our room (9) was filthy, tiny and filled with tacky cheap furniture. A dirty handkerchief was found down the back of the bed and the bed drape board was covered in tin foil.

Bathroom disgusting - the shower curtain filthy and stained -and just about every fitting was either faulty, broken or worn out. The 'sliding' door to the bathroom got stuck everytime we attempted to open/close it and is a relic from the dark ages.

There were no tea or coffee making facilities although the website proudly announces that all rooms are "spacious and individually furnished with tea and coffee facilities". We did not even attempt to have breakfast at the communal table for fear of what the kitchen may have been like - if it mirrored the bedrooms.....

Shame on the owner Mr Alam whose hotel website is a total con.

The only positive comment to make is to say that the two members of staff we met were polite and friendly.

“Expected far more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2010

I spent one night in this hotel whilst in London for business. The lady working at the hotel was very pleasant and helpful and the building itself and the room where the business of paying took place gave me high expectations for the actual room. Unfortunately I was left feeling a little deflated when I saw the room. The room was spacious and comfortable but the decor looked a little tacky and the pattern on the bedspread was so busy and cheap looking. The bathroom was a nice size and I liked the layout of the room but I couldn't help thinking that I could have done a better job of the cleaning and the bed linen didn't feel particularly good quality.

The location was superb, staff were excellent and I had a very good sleep the night I stayed there but for the price I expected better quality furnishings and a more classical decor. It was a pleasant stay but for the money I think I'd stay somewhere else in future.

“Full of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2010

After reading the mixed reviews I expected either Fawlty Towers or a secret little gem. I am glad to say for us it turned out to be the latter. One review states not all rooms are en-suite. Perhaps that was the case in the past but now all 12 rooms are en-suite. I confirmed this with the hotel after reading the review...

We had booked 1 night in a double room and had a lovely time. Upon ringing the doorbell we were immediately greeted by a smart and very welcoming young man who checked us in and took our luggage up to our room whilst we were filling in the usual paperwork. The hotel proprietor also welcomed us and had a friendly little chat.

We had a big room (no. 6) with an enormous and very comfortable bed. There was a walk-in closet and a huge, brandnew bathroom. Everything was spotless clean. There were no tea/coffee making facilities but a bottle of water and 2 polished glasses. There were no fancy toiletries but there was a bar of Dove soap and also soap to wash your hands. If you want to wash your hair, bring your own shampoo (there is a hairdryer).

After asking for the quickest way to get a taxi, the same young man who had checked us in took the trouble to dash outside (in the rain) and hail a black cab for us. I call this great service.

Continental breakfast which consisted of toast, butter, jam, marmelade, tea & coffee was included in our stay. The tea was some of the best I ever had in a hotel (normally tastes of dishwater but this one was exceptionally good). In addition we were offered eggs & bacon which we declined.

The hotel is filled with old furniture (some antique, some not), books, paintings and decorative objects. I love the old wood panelled lift which has room for a maximum of 3 people and a little bench to sit down. Or the dumb waiter in the breakfast room that suddenly disappears into the floor (down to the kitchen of course...). This hotel is full of character, slightly eccentric and should not be compared to any of the chain hotels which all look the same. The decor was not all to my taste but certainly not boring and I do not expect hotel owners to furnish their business to my specifications. I enjoyed my stay and if coming to London again I will stay at Ormonde House.

I have to correct one of the previous reviewers who states there is a large picture of Blondie in the room where guests are checked in. Blondie is the band, the picture is of Debbie Harry who is the singer of the band. And anyone who has a picture of Debbie Harry on their wall, especially amidst classical landscape scenes and paintings of pretty flowers, gets my vote anytime.
