“Lovely people but where was the hospitality tray?”

Very welcoming lovely owners & a beautiful house with patchworks and antiques, but at this price there were a few glaring omissions. There was no provision for drinks of tea & coffee other than those supplied at breakfast and breakfast itself was minimal (the cooked breakfast just bacon and egg - tho nicely cooked). The room also wasn't cleaned, not even the bathroom, which again for this price it should have been.

“Quiet location in South London”

We enjoyed our 6 night stay at this interesting B&B. Our hosts Sue and Tim were very welcoming, charming folks. We selected this B&B because we wanted to be near a train station, yet in a quiet location. Crystal Park train station is not too far, but it was very hilly and our legs got a good workout. Tim was always willing to give us a lift to the station. The kitchen, where breakfast was served, was warm and inviting. We were invited to join family gatherings. The garden was lovely, and the chickens running around was a novelty we didn't expect in London. There were wonderful restaurants within walking distance. The house is filled with antiques and quilts which Sue makes. She is multitalented, as she is also a gourmet cook. I loved the bathtub and the view from the window of our room. It also had a real king size bed...difficult to find in London.

“Wonderful B & B Experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

We were looking for a home-stay type experience on our first trip to London--found this in Alistair Sawday's Garden B & B book. Loved it, and have returned from the states numerous times w/other relatives and friends! True family experience; felt like Tim and Sue treated us with respect and friendship, making many recommmendations on buses to take, how to schedule, etc. They provided a wonderful breakfast at whatever time we asked--Tim even made us tea each day upon returning from our sight-seeing. Tim and Sue offered to drive us the five minute walk to the train station on rainy days, very thoughtful and accommodating. Have stayed in three different room configurations there, all clean, all comfy. Plenty of storage for our bags and shopping. Were introduced to friends and family members of theirs as they stopped by, never made to feel like a "guest" who wasn't included. Am ready to go back to enjoy their hospitality and company again! Highly recommend this trip, unless you are into club life and hotels...then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a family-and-friend place to feel welcome and be comfortable, go, go, go!!

“Warm and Homey”

I've stayed at this B&B on 4 different occasions. My cousin and I wanted to learn about the culture since our ancestors were from England. We did not want to stay in a commercial hotel, but wanted the experience of a regular neighborhood and family experience.

That's is exactly what we got at Fox Hill. We were welcomed like old friends. Both Tim and Sue were completely open with us, there is nothing they don't know about visiting London. We weren't treated like paying customers, but more like friends and both Sue and Tim were very helpful and patient with us asking them dozens of questions about English culture, food, traditions, etc.

If you are looking to experience how regular people live in England I would highly recommend Fox HiIl. I also enjoyed it because it is not a "cookie cutter" type of hotel that you can go to anytime that you are in a hurry and just need a place to sleep. It was an enjoyable experience, interesting art and textiles, beautiful garden, the family, the animals and excellent conversation.

“Not good value for money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

We were disappointed in this B&B. The house and rooms were very cluttered and not particularly clean--two cats and a huge dog leave a lot of dander and hair. The location is out of the way, and the rates are very expensive given how far it is from central London. Breakfast was absolutely dreadful--the toast was burnt and the bacon very salty and of poor quality (not to mention the small quantities). For all the boasting about their fresh eggs, we were served only one each. We expected more from a B&B that charges 100 GBP per night.

At first, we felt that despite the glaring shortcomings, the owners seemed very nice and helpful. However, that all changed when it came time to pay. We had forgotten that the hotel only accepted cash, and when we offered to pay by credit card, the proprietress instantly became cross. She chastised us as if we were children; it was as if she thought we didn't have money to pay her! In the end, she got her money, but not our repeat business.

Your 100 quid is better off spent elsewhere.
