“Good Value & Service But Some Issues”

This was my second stay at the Novotel ExCel in the past 6 months and I was less impressed this time.

Check-in was pleasant and the rooms, beds and pillows are all fairly comfortable as before. The location is good for ExCel (obviously), the O2, City Airport and Canary Wharf. Even Stratford and the Olympic Park are within relatively easy reach by public transport. However, I couldn’t manage to match the Transport for London projected time of 25 minutes to Bank and the City by DLR and you are probably looking at nearer 45-50 minutes to get to the West End.

However, I did have some issues during my stay. My “Non-Smoking” room smelled distinctly of smoke, and the cleaning wasn’t brilliant. My bin wasn’t always emptied and the bathroom had one of those nasty hotel basins that takes a few minutes to drain which isn’t pleasant and means that you have to wait and wipe it down yourself to avoid unpleasant stains etc. On the subject of hygiene, I am also far from convinced about Novotel’s preference for a separate toilet. There’s no basin in that room and so you have to open two sets of doors before you can wash your hands which can’t be a good thing. Hand sanitiser anyone?

With the proximity to City airport, there is some aircraft noise which starts at around 6.45am. I didn’t find it too intrusive although you may if you are a light sleeper.

Perhaps I am being a little mean with my 3 star rating but, for me, this wasn’t a 4 star experience. My first stay back in late 2011 was better however.

Room Tip: Check that Non-Smoking actually means Non-Smoking!

Greetings from Novotel London ExCeL, Royal Victoria Dock. I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay with us.

I am pleased you found the location convenient for the ExCeL London (Exhibition centre) and ICC (International Convention Centre), the O2 Arena and Indig02, London City Airport (LCY), Canary Wharf and Stratford with Olympic Park and the new Westfield Stratford City Shopping centre.

The DLR (Docklands Light Railway) journey from Custom House (for ExCeL) to Bank station is 25 minutes and 30 minutes to Green Park station on the DLR & Jubilee Line (change at Canning Town station).

Since 1st January 2011 the hotel has been completely non-smoking, we offer ash trays for guests to use on the Upper Deck Terrace and ash cans at the front of the hotel premises. All bedrooms are non smoking with non smoking signage on each bedroom door.

Your observations are paramount to us. We thank you for all your comments and we would like to assure you that anything brought to our notice is treated with care and attention it deserves.

“Lovely staff”

Recently stayed at the London excel Novotel and had a lovely experience. Staff were friendly and professional, room was clean and hotel was in a great location.
My only negative was that the pillows could be improved in the room as I found them to be uncomfortable.

“Currently my favourite London Hotel”

I first stayed here in November, being lucky enough to get a room for £55 with Last minute.com
Now that I know how to get it cheaply I stayed again on Feb 6th, £65 inc Breakfast.
Its obviously not Central London, but on balance its worth the 30 min trek out.
The rooms are really good standard with good beds and a pristine bathroom and all the little extras. The bar and restaurant are modern and efficient with a fairly reasonably priced menu and the breakfast is really good - great range of fresh fruit and breads as well as usual cooked options.
The whole place has a buzz as most guests seem to be at events in O2/Excel , so it has a
friendly cosmopolitan feel and is ideal if travelling on your own.
Great internet facilities with modern apple pcs in reception , and rarely a crowd waiting for them.
Staff are helpful and efficient.
The restaurant takes orders up to 10.30 and had a set menu at £20 for 2 courses - great if you are arriving late , small gripe with cold potatoes , otherwise faultless.
In summary if you don't mind not being in central London you will get a much better deal here in exchange for a little extra time on the train!

“Firm beds and cloud like pillows.”

We have stayed here 3 or 4 times and have always enjoyed this hotel. The staff are friendly and courteous though the one lady at reception seemed a bit under pressure as we had booked 3 rooms.
The electronic room card needed a bit of encouragement and you need this to access the first set of elevators.
On here there are a lot of comments about the beds and rightly so. I love a firm bed and they dont come much firmer than these. In direct contrast the pillows are useless. Phone down for more as you walk in as there was only one extra in the wardrobe.
The bathroom is excellent, great shower pressure and plenty of room with a small bath and another shower attachment. The downside is the seperate toilet. Its almost like someone designed the bathroom without putting a small entry in the diary to add a w.c. This is housed seperately in a cupboard sized room next to the room entrance.
The TV is adequate and the lighting quite good. We didnt use the Wi-Fi.
The room was ok temperature wise and the air conditioning seemed to work. The room presentation was good and very clean. Its also very quiet , at least it was on the 7th floor.
If possible book a dockside room as the view on our side to the north is a bit depressing but lovely blackout curtains kept the light out until we were ready.
Breakfast was superb apart from a lack lustre toaster that takes two times to produce a decent slice. The choice of food is amazing and is served from 6am till 12 for that morning after the night before !
Disappointingly the bar shuts at 1am for us insomniacs but the staff gave us plenty of notice.
The views of the dock from the restaurant are good and there is a terrace to sit outside should the weather allow.
Ok so now its gripe time ! £15 to park seems excessive as some of the hotel parking in this area is free and its not the largest of car parks to move around.
Worse than that is the quality of the toilet paper. Its a disgrace in a 4 star hotel. Rough is not the word !!
Apart from the parking, toilet paper and pillows this is a nice modern place to be.
There is an excellent little shop almost opposite the hotel, open late for newspapers,
magazines and general groceries .
We will return.

Room Tip: Book a dockside room if possible . The views are better.

In January 2012 we installed two new medium pillow’s (alongside the two existing firm pillow’s installed late last year) into every bedroom. My apologies if this wasn’t the case for your room.
