“You get what you pay for!”

We stayed in a triple room but I must say it was very small!! At times I had to climb over the beds to get from one side of the room to the other!! The bathroom is akin to the ones you get in the budget hotels in Europe - small! We stayed in room 104 which overlooks Sussex Gardens and has a balcony which was quite nice for sitting and watching the world go by! The staff were excellent and courteous, the breakfast, although continental, was adequate and the hotel, although a little run down and in need of refurbishment, was clean. There's tea and coffee in the room. No hairdryer, but you just need to ask at receiption and they will provide one. We have previously stayed at a hotel a few doors away from the Columbus which was far superior but so was the price! Excellent location, just a few minutes walk from Paddington Station and say twenty minutes walk to Marble Arch. Plenty of pubs and restaurants close by. If we need just a cheap few days in London again in the future, we will have no hesitation in staying again at the Columbus - you get what you pay for!!

“Absolute fantastic value for money... cannot fault it one bit!”

Myself and my boyfriend travelled down to London to see Kings of Leon at Hyde Park. I booked the hotel online, not only due to it being just around the corner from the venue but also because it was so cheap compared to other hotels!

In all honesty we arrived in London and I had thoughts of a hotel that wasn't going to be 'top notch' due to the amount we paid for the room (£79 for the night), however on arrival we were pleasantly surprised.

We arrived at Hotel Columbus and straight away it looked beautiful from the outside. We were greeted at reception and were checked in quickly and efficiently. The staff were very welcoming and friendly which was a nice welcome after our train journey down.

We stayed in room 503 which was on the basement level. The room was immaculately clean, the bed linen was fresh and the bathroom was sparkling. Even better, we heard no noise due to us being down so low from street level.
The room included tv and tea/ coffee facilities and in the bathroom, a good shower.

I can safely say I had the best night's sleep at this hotel as I felt so comfortable there.

Breakfast the following morning was self serve continental which included toast, croissants, cereal.... and again we were greeted by the staff. After breakfast we were given maps of London to help us go sight seeing before returning home later that day. It was a pity we were only at the hotel for one night, but I will definately be returning in the future.

If you are looking for a great hotel in London that doesn't cost over the odds... go for Hotel Columbus, you will not be dissapointed I promise!

“great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

Recently stayed at the Hotel Columbus for 5 nights. Quad room.
Postivies: Great location. 5 min walk to buses or Paddington Tube Station
Hotel staff is very friendly. Excellent customer service. Breakfast-rolls, ham cheese, cold cereals, yogurt, fruit, juice. Beautiful big trees line the street. Garfunkel's restaraunt 5 min walk. Good food, great price.
Negatives: Hotel is VERY old and the rooms are very small. Could use freshing up with new carpet, bedspreads, and accessories to make it feel more like "home." Bathroom is smaller than average bathroom on a cruise ship. Can use the toilet, wash your hands in the sink, and wash your feet in the shower all at the same time. No staff on duty after 10:30pm. Very noisy area.
Not a bad place to stay close to a tube station Customer service made up for the negatives of the room.

“Wouldn't go back again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2010

Want to write a review to tell others to think twice if they want to book this hotel. We stayed in a double room on the top floor and had to climb up very narrow and steep stairs. The room faced the busy road and was quite noisy at night. It looked clean and the shower room was so small and closed to the bed that when the door was open, you could not walk to the bed on that side. The toilet smell was always there and there wasn't ventilation in the bathroom.
When I was working on the computer that night, a dark shadow ( didn't know if it was a small rat or cockcroach dashed across from door to the other corner of the room, which scared me. It was late and after 10:30 pm, no one was on the reception and so, we didn't ask to change the room.
Of course I didn't sleep well that night fearing that the creature would appear again.
Breakfast was meant to be 8 am and we went to the Breakfast room at 8:10 hoping to eat early then checked out because we had to catch the train to elsewhere. The breakfast room was closed with lights off and so was the reception counter. Some other guests were waiting too. Then we went up to pack our luggage and went down again...No staff again and it was until about 8:30 that breakfast room was lit up for service. We had to eat in a hurry and had no time to make the complaint about the room. I didn't want to upset the staff there too because the man had been working real hard serving all guests by himself. He was a nice guy but didn't speak good English.
Another unacceptable thing about the hotel was in the room, there was only one power switch you could use. We had to take the TV plug off before we could use our notebook computer. While one was on the internet, no TV for the other. Then we had to turn off the computer when we had to charge the camera , phone battery..etc. We found it ridiculous and unbearable. When we asked for the extension board, the man didn't understand and wanted to bring us an adapter.
This is a hotel I will not return if I am to stay in Paddington again . There are many hotels offering similar rates or cheaper, near by, which are far better

“superb value, perfect for family city trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2009

We booked out stay at the Columbus only 24 hours before our stay when we took our 4 year old son for a trip to London to see the sights, Aquarium, London Eye, Hamleys, Christmas Lights etc. We wanted somewhere central, near a tube/bus stop near the sights.

We found the Columbus having been astonished how much the chains, Travelodge, Premier Inn, Holiday Inn etc wanted for just one night with some not including any breakfast in their rates. It was perfect for what we wanted. Yes, its not luxurious but neither are the budget hotel chains but it was totally adeqaute for us.

Comfortable double and single bed, with room between them, showeroom was very clean (yet cosy) - one at a time only.

Breakfast was included and was made up of tea, coffee, juices, bread, toaster, croissant, rolls, cheese, ham, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, jams and chocolate spread (loved by our 4 year old on his toast)

For food in the evening we went to the Swan pub round the corner, welcomed our four year old (although they did not do child portions for food they supplied plate for us to share our dinner with him) where we had a great meal before heading to see the Xmas lights

Next morning, Hyde Park only 3-4 minute walk away for refreshing stroll

If you have concerns about booking with an independent hotel rather than a chain, (like we did) then rest assured, the Columbus is just as good as any we have stayed in.
