“Great location, friendly staff, poor conditions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

I, actually, kind of enjoyed the stay here, although there is a lot more to desire. But first the pros: the location is super convenient - Hyde Park is right there, and the London Paddington rail station is just few minutes away. The staff was all friendly and helpful. There was some problem with the sink in our room and they were kind enough to move us to another (although smaller) room. It was warm inside, additional sheets were provided on request for no charge. So far, so good. BUT there are some cons: cleanliness... they should really think about hiring some housekeepers or something, cause, really, I've been to cheaper hostels and in comparison to Alexandra, they look like castles; WiFi wasn't available first 2 nights for some reason; Our room was facing the street, so it got pretty noisy inside early in the morning.
Oh, and one more thing! We wandered for about 15 mins trying to find the hotel. Tripadvisor says it's at 10 Sussex Place, though the hotel's website says different.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are quite noisy.

“Prime location but not worth the pain. Avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Is in a prime location but the hotel itself is rubbish. The rooms are small and difficult to move around. The toilet is puny and for a normal sized male you need to open the door in order to stand up and sit down. The cleanliness of the room is questionable. The toilet seat had a hair stuck to it upon check in. The staff are all migrants and have a strong accent. One of the staff members working at the reception required the voucher for the last night and was very overbearing and was trying to get me to sign something instead of the voucher when I was searching for it in my bag. the cleaner was very rude when asking if we wanted our room cleaned and required us to leave the "straight away" in order to clean it and told us it would be 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes. How can the duration of cleaning vary by up to 15 minutes? Furthermore, you have to make a £10 deposit in order to have a remote for your TV in your room and the menu for the TV is in Italian. The lift was broken during our stay and were told on the first day we checked in (new years day) that a contractor would be sent out to fix it after the public holiday. By the third day it still had not been fixed. We were placed on the fourth floor and were not asked if we required help to carry our suitcases to the fourth floor (the stairs twirl around as well). Was not particularly cheap. Not a pleasant experience and would definitely not recommend to anyone else.

“Cheap but not so cheerful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

Firstly - rooms are cheap, we booked ahead and paid about £60 per night for a double room.

On arrival, we were put in a twin room, even though a double had be booked. We went back to reception and asked to be moved to a double but they could not accommodate this request.

The room was tired looking, TV had no remote control and sheets were itchy. The bathroom was laughable - smaller than an airplane toilet and you could barely close the door when you used the loo.

Breakfast was white toast with ham and processed cheese with watery orange juice and (warm) cheap yoghurts. Nothing hot to have except tea/coffee - you really need a bit more to warm you through in December in London!

The only redeeming features are the price, which is cheap for London, and the location. Very handy being so close to Paddington and Hyde Park. However, I would not stay here again.

“Poor rooms, poor breakfast.”

Took 1hr to check in. Not the hotels fault, booking agents. Travel Republic, avoid at all costs. Ended up having to pay again and claim back money from agent. £100 for family room, not bad as it should have been £200.
Got family room but the decor and layout were bad. No remote for TV.
Breakfast was toast with ham or processed cheese, cheap yoghurt, orange squash and bad instant coffee.
At least I was only there for one night.
Positive was receptionist was as helpful as he could be.

“Beware of surprises and little flexibility”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011
1
person found this review helpful

Perfect location, but unpleasant surprises and little flexibility made the stay one we would have wanted to avoid.
Beware that they only have 8 (out of 100) double beds and that even though you believe you are booking a double, it is "based on availability", i.e. you will most likely end up with twin beds.
Also, the bed cover (fitted) doubles, also winter time, as what is supposed to keep you warm at night. Not very hygienic, nor particularly warm. When asking for a duvet or maybe a wool blanket, we first got no reaction ("we'll check" and nothing happened), then were told that no, they had nothing, but we could get an extra bed cover.
Making the bed was one day equal to "put the bed cover on", so don't expect too much here either. Ok clean, though, and new towels every day if you want them.
And the breakfast is as low budget you can get without not being able to call it breakfast anymore.
So in sum: If you don't care about the above and either take breakfast out, this is ok value for your money.
