“Thieves - No. Thenardiers, well perhaps”
Who could ever forget the brilliant comic relief from Monsieur et Madame Thenardier, those saucy innkeepers who rooked their guests out of every last sou in Les Miserables? In "Master of the House" they even brag about charging an extra "three percent for sleeping with the window shut!" Of course what delights audiences in the West End, doesn't necessarily play all that well in North Acton.
Prior to booking a prepaid non-refundable reservation in October, I e-mailed the hotel to specifically inquire about internet access. I received a prompt reply from the reservations coordinator, Lydia, informing me that wifi was "completely free of charge." Upon arrival I was told that "management" had a change of heart in December and decided to charge five pounds for 24 hours of internet access. I was also informed that this charge would apply to all guests, including those who had previous booked their reservations based on the expectation of free access. While five pounds for 24 hours is reasonable by London standards, it is regrettable that management here feels a need to collect this petty sum from unsuspecting guests.
Otherwise, I was extremely pleased with the service and comfort of this hotel. Although it has been about five years since my last visit, the hotel was as fresh and clean as ever and the staff helpful and friendly. The location is a big plus being only 17 minutes from Marble Arch on the Central Line. And from Heathrow it's an easy journey as well. At North Acton there now are lifts at the extreme west end of the platforms, making the platform crossover a breeze. Ealing Broadway is a head stop, so switching from the District to Central line is likewise completely step free. At North Acton there are some steps but they're not very steep. So even with baggage, the trip by tube is simple and inexpensive.
Breakfast here is consistent and good. The scrambled eggs must come from the same "factory" that supplies other Holiday Inn Express hotels in London as they have the same powdery texture. I never tasted anything that quite resembled that, but maybe British chickens lay unique eggs. But overall the hot food selections are tasty and satisfying as are the cold cereals, bread and pastries.
The only feature lacking in this hotel, aside from complimentary wifi, is in-room digital safes. While you can check valuables at the reception, the convenience of an in-room safe for storing passports, documents and electronic devices cannot be overstated.
So in conclusion, unlike the Thenardiers, the staff here are well groomed, well mannered and don't wear eye patches. However please be prepared to purchase a daily voucher for five pounds should you wish to access the internet, regardless of what you were told at the time of booking. And also contrary to the advice received from the hotel, there are, in fact, internet roaming partners, including Boingo, so you may want to consider a UK monthly subscription to avoid the hotel's daily charges.
Room Tip: Rooms facing the train tracks are quiet and have a nice view.

I am very sorry for the new charges we have had to raise for wi-fi. We did expect our guests to be dissatified with this fee and have kept it to a minimum.
It is always great to read the positive comments and I am absolutely thrilled that the rest of your stay was as pleasant as the one 5 years ago!
I hope it won't be that long for your next stay in London. Do let me know when you will be back - we will make sure you have a perfect one!
Sincerely
Stella Fernandes
