“Great location in Bloomsbury to see the sites!”

We stayed at The Mentone Hotel for three nights and found it to be a great location to sight-see.
The hotel has been refurbished and our ensuite room was quite modern and clean. Because the hotel is on a side street, our sleep was sound.
The typical, English breakfast is served in part by pleasant, very efficient waitresses; the rest of the items are on a buffet table. The diningroom is in need of updating for it looks pretty tired.
We thought the cost per night a little expensive but anything cheaper had poor reviews.

“Mentone”

After booking we read some reviews and were a bit dubious about staying, but luckily we were pleasantly surprised as it wasn’t as bad as we expected. We stayed for 2 nights and were given a twin on the top floor (No Lift) the last flight of curved steps were narrow and steep. Room very clean and lovely shower room. Towels and bedding were fresh on the first day, but towels not replaced which we didn’t mind. Pity about the person in room 31, guest from hell, banging doors until 5am.
The steps down to the eating area were also steep! Breakfast room was cramped and if you don’t arrive early you will have to queue at the bottom of the stairs. The breakfast choices were ok. Had scrambled egg first morning but this was cold so decided to stick to cereal and toast.
Desk staff was very helpful. We were able to leave luggage until we were due to catch our train home. Location in Bloomsbury was close to Euston Station and the underground. Ideal for Brunswick Centre, Convent Garden and other sights and amenities within walking distance. All in all will probably stay again and give it another chance.

“Small, useful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

A friend and colleague recommended this hotel to me years ago, when committee meetings took me regularly to London. I've used it on a number of occasions, most recently in May 2011.
It is conveniently sited within 5 minutes walk of King's Cross Station - though taxi drivers sometimes grumble because it's only a short "fare".
The major hurdle for me, as someone who is mildly disabled, is the absence of a lift, but a request for a ground floor room for that cause is met without question whenever possible. The rooms vary in size and outlook, which is unavoidable in a building of this age, but I've never found it to be anything less than spotless and the staff are always professional. Though the standard of their friendliness does vary, I've never met anything approaching rudeness, and most are very helpful.
Breakfast is a mixture of buffet and cooked, though the breakfast room could be a little bigger and can get a bit crowded sometimes.
The biggest issue in finding somewhere in London is price, followed by and linked to locale and facilities. The kind of hotel that has a lift and room service is in a different price bracket; if I were staying in London for any length of time, I'd probably go to somewhere with more facilities and then grumble about the cost.
If one's stay is no more than one through three nights then this is fair choice. For the price bracket that the Mentone is in, then it has the level of facilities that are usual, and overall is significantly better than average. I've stayed in places in this price-range that were nowhere near as pleasant.
In the end, your experience will come down to expectation. If you expect a three or four star hotel, you'll not find it here; but if a one-to-two star guest house will meet your needs, then you will be more than satisfied.

“Cosy friendly spot at a superconvenient location”

This is a small hotel 5 min. from St Pacras, which is great if you are coming to London by Eurostar. Reception is friendly if not really warm, and rooms are small but clean and cosy. Free wifi is a big plus for me in a hotel of this price range. Would have been nice to find a little shower gel in the bathroom though. Breakfast was fine. All is all a pleasant experience and I will come back.

“A tiny step above a youth hostel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

The staff, especially Louis, were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was passable. The room was hot and uncomfortable. No A/C and based by the heaters in the store room, probably not very warm in winter. It is a old and not very well serviced boarding house. Pay more and get a real Hotel. Unless you're a college student who likes to party.
