“Small room”

We were warned that the room we were in was small by the girl on checkout and we were offered a basement room but this was at the front of the hotel next to the road. What we didn't expect was a room so small that one side of the double bed was up against a wall! The hotel is well located near the British Museum and is clean and tidy, however, the hotel doesn't have a bar and you have to go to the hotel next door for breakfast!

“Weekend stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

We stayed at the Portland for two nights for our wedding anniversary,
We were greeted at the door by the Concierge who (even hough it was quite late) had a beaming smile and was a very friendly chap,
While booking in we were given a free upgrade to an Executive room which was fantastic.
The hotel was very clean as was the room, all the facilities you would expect, ie tv, iron, kettle, internet access even a small kitchenette, the only down side to this was the fridge which wasn't very good but to be honest when you stay in London you don't stay in your hotel to cook!!
Breakfast was next door in one of the Portlands sister hotels, which is 20 steps away so no complaints at all there. Breakfast was Continental and was very good, all the food was fresh and plentiful. A cooked breakfast is available but at almost 24 pounds each its scandalously expensive.
Nicely positioned for most amenities and near to all transport links. Overall a very nice place and yes we would stay at the Portland again.

“Great hotel for business stays and for short breaks too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

This is the first time I stayed in this hotel becasue my usual hotel was full. I had a room in the basement (but it had a window out to the road so not dark). The room was large, the bed was fabulous, very comfortable with lots of lovely pillows and a soft duvet. There was even a little kitchenette area behind a cupboard.
For breakfast I had to go to the hotel next door but it was worth it, lots of choice, smoked salmon, meats, cheese - everything - hot breakfast was lovely.
A really lovely experience for the price - I was extremely satified.
To top it all the receptionist and the other staff were so polite, helpful and really lovely too.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room in the basement because it is quiet and the rooms are big.

“Really pleasant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We booked into The Lancaster but were moved across the road to the Portland(part of the same chain) I was not suprised by this as a friend had a similar experience with the Grange chain previously. We had been upgraded and I must say had a fabulous room. A very large room with a seating area, very roomy bathroom and a small kitchen area which although we did not use could have been very useful had we been staying longer. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We made enquiries about buses and tubes and when we came back in after taking a walk the young receptionist had run off from the computer maps of routes etc, Later on that night I discovered that there was no hot water. I informed the staff and it was discovered that there was a fault throughout the hotel. The staff were very apologetic and offered to relocate us at their expense to a five star hotel near St Paul's. At the time we were really tired so declined. Emergency maintenance was called out and the fault repaired within the hour. These things can happen in hotels but we were very pleased at the way the company dealt with us and the problem They insisted we had a complimentary "full English breakfast" which we can honestly say was excellent. We were in a room at the front of the hotel and a couple of times we heard the noise of people probably going home after a night out. There was no traffic noise at all. We thought that The Portland was excellent value for money. It is well located for buses, metro and trains as well as being near many of the main attractions. We will definitely stay there again.

“Very nice hotel and hope to return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

A well-appointed and comfortable hotel. Fairly expensive, though. We were lucky to get a room for 4 nights having booked a place across the road, which turned out to be a filthy dump.
Bedford Place is in a pleasant part of London and so convenient for tubes, buses and taxis, as well as for walking. We initially used the Hop on Hop off bus to find our way around London - and then travelled to Kew Gardens and all the major tourist sights using Oyster cards and London sightseeing cards.
Well recommended.
