“Really pleasant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We booked into The Lancaster but were moved across the road to the Portland(part of the same chain) I was not suprised by this as a friend had a similar experience with the Grange chain previously. We had been upgraded and I must say had a fabulous room. A very large room with a seating area, very roomy bathroom and a small kitchen area which although we did not use could have been very useful had we been staying longer. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We made enquiries about buses and tubes and when we came back in after taking a walk the young receptionist had run off from the computer maps of routes etc, Later on that night I discovered that there was no hot water. I informed the staff and it was discovered that there was a fault throughout the hotel. The staff were very apologetic and offered to relocate us at their expense to a five star hotel near St Paul's. At the time we were really tired so declined. Emergency maintenance was called out and the fault repaired within the hour. These things can happen in hotels but we were very pleased at the way the company dealt with us and the problem They insisted we had a complimentary "full English breakfast" which we can honestly say was excellent. We were in a room at the front of the hotel and a couple of times we heard the noise of people probably going home after a night out. There was no traffic noise at all. We thought that The Portland was excellent value for money. It is well located for buses, metro and trains as well as being near many of the main attractions. We will definitely stay there again.

“Very nice hotel and hope to return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

A well-appointed and comfortable hotel. Fairly expensive, though. We were lucky to get a room for 4 nights having booked a place across the road, which turned out to be a filthy dump.
Bedford Place is in a pleasant part of London and so convenient for tubes, buses and taxis, as well as for walking. We initially used the Hop on Hop off bus to find our way around London - and then travelled to Kew Gardens and all the major tourist sights using Oyster cards and London sightseeing cards.
Well recommended.

“Awful....says it all!”

I hated every minute of my stay in this hotel, if you can really call it that!

The hotel is a converted town house in a row of converted townhouses. This I didn't mind and thought that it might even make the hotel quite quaint, with traditional features. Check-in and out was fine. The staff, although overworked by appearances, were polite and friendly.

The room however was disgusting. You really do get what you pay for because the room was tiny, with a small bathroom you could barely move in, and for some strange reason, there was a cupboard with a sink, fridge and microwave inside it.

It had all the right facilities, with toiletries, coffee, sugar, TV, towel and hairdryer but oh my, they were all so cheap and nasty.

Breakfast is two houses up in a sister hotel and don't be fooled, when you book on-line, you are only paying for the continental breakfast, not the full English. When you go to order the full English in the sister hotel up the road, you are told you have to pay extra. Which in my opinion, wasn't worth it as it was all really cheap ingredients.

I stayed in the Portland because of a work function in the evening, so the next day, I was back in the office and have to say, I felt itchy the whole time and couldn't wait to get home to put everything from my suitcase and on me, into the wash.

Would I stay there again? Definitely not! It may be one of the cheapest rooms in London but I would no much rather pay the extra to at least have some cleanliness. Uuggh, I shudder every time I think about it!

“Surprisingly good hotel at great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2010 via mobile

Was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Its in a great location almost next door to the British Museum and a short walk to Soho, Covent Garden and Oxford Street. The room was very spacious and had good decor. It was much bigger than the usual london hotel rooms. I highly recommend this Hotel and the other sister hotels on the same street.

“Great location, nice room but spoilt by poor sleep from noise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2010

2nd hotel in this chain I've stayed in. Great position for sight seeing/ West End. Room was spacious and clean. Great building (old town house). Big complaint for me was noise. The full length, sash, wood windows are beautiful, but hopeless at keeping street noise out. Loud motorcycle outside after midnight. and other occassional vehicles kept me awake. Then the guest in room above walking around a lot and old floorboards creaking, made it a miserable night for me. Shame, because I really like the character of the hotels and the efforts made by the chain. So,overall , the Portland was not good value for me.
