City Quarters St Pauls is tucked away on Ludgate Hill and from the outside you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a tiny establishment, but inside the five floors of rabbit-warren-like corridors, they’ve managed to fit an awful lot of decent sized rooms.
Ok, compared to elsewhere in the world, these are small rooms, big enough for a double bed, an ironing board, a desk and not much else, but we didn’t feel constrained, and had a nice view from our 6th floor window of St Paul’s.
(The ironing board doesn’t come with the room – to save space, all the ironing boards are in a cupboard by the lift, which makes sense unless every guest decided simultaneously that they needed to iron a shirt.)
On the positive side, it’s reasonably priced for a hotel in London; if you wanted to spend a weekend near St Paul’s/the Barbican/Smithfields/the Museum of London then it’s perfectly located. Rooms come with an ipod dock, which more than makes up for having to walk fifteen yards to locate the ironing board. There’s not much in the way of a minibar, but free purified water amply compensates for that.
The negatives are that it’s in that location, which is rather far east if you want to be in the midst of things (as already explained, that might not be an issue), and the walls of the rooms are rather thin – we were woken up at 5:30 by our neighbour’s alarm clock.
Check-in/check-out can be via a computer terminal in the lobby, although it didn’t work for us when we had to check out. Still, that didn’t make much odds: even with a big crowd of guests checking out, we were processed by the front desk in less than a minute.
