“Excellent Value for Money if you get a good rate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I stayed with a friend in the Grange City from 4th - 6th February 2012. We booked via Lastminute.com and paid £100 per night for a Saturday and Sunday night. We asked to be given a twin room and we were delighted that we were given a twin on the 9th floor with stunning views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. This was spectacular given it was snowing. The concierge helpfully provided bathrobes within five minutes of our request which was excellent. We used the health club and although the pool was freezing and the changing room decor tired, it was good to have a hotel in central London with these facilities. The City at a weekend is very very quiet but if you're prepared to travel into central parts of London, the hotel is an excellent choice, right next to the tube but not at all noisy. Having stayed in five star hotels in the past, the service is not on a par but the quality would certainly be a 4*. To get a four start hotel for £100 a night is a bargain in itself! With rack rates starting at much more than double that price, all in all the weekend rates offer excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Upper floors give a great view

“Grange cannot do 5 star Hotels, disappointed again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This is the second Grange Hotel I have stayed in the last month(the first being St Pauls). Again I was disappointed you are not welcomed at the Hotel and the staff are not helpful. I arrived at the Hotel was not greeted at the entrance or given assistance with my bags. According to the AA star rating a 5 Star Hotel should greet guests on entrance, on the 3 days I was there I was not once greeted.
I checked in and again not offered help with my bags. The room was quite nice although there was a problem with the air con which took six phone calls and 3 hours before the staff bothered to do anything. The Hotel is 1 minute from Tower Hill Tube and is near the City and Tower Bridge so is in good location. The only problem is that 95% of the bars in the vicinity are only open Mon- Friday. Surprisingly Saturday nights in that area are dire. So you have to travel further a field on a Saturday.
The on site gym and swimming pool are very good and well equipped. The bar in the hotel did not have friendly staff and the service was appalling. Also I tried the room service and paid £14 for the worst Pizza I have ever had, why it was so bad is beyond me but you can get frozen pizza's in the supermarket for a couple of quid which are ten times better. I would only recommend this hotel if you can get a very good deal on the price. It is certainly do where near the standard you expect from a 5 Star Hotel. Grange Hotels clearly do not tell the staff to be friendly, welcome and look after their guests. Half the rooms have a good view over the Tower of London the others have a really poor view. Not very good value and there are alot better 5 Star Hotels in London.
I have also found with Grange that although they say "Best Price Guaranteed" on there website you can get the rooms cheaper on other websites and Grange won't match those prices even when you phone up and query it, bizarre?

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Tower of London.

“Lovely hotel but a few mishaps getting there....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I've stayed at the St Paul's Grange Hotel, which out of the two I would definately recommend as a better hotel and overall experience.

I booked to stay for two nights at the Grange City Hotel. I also booked a package of chocolates and champagne to be surprise in our room that my partner didn't know about. When we arrived (check in from 2pm onwards) our room wasn't ready, we were told it would be a few minutes. After 45 minutes of watching other people check in we went back to reception explaining that we had tickets for wine tasting and the theatre that we would be late for if we waited any longer for the room. The receptionist apologised (this was probably the 3rd time we had returned to the desk asking when the room would be available). During check in the receptionist actually discussed that we had a "package" in the room, I gave her good eye contact in which she suddenly realised that this was suppose to be a secret. Luckily my partner didn't hear but I still thought this was quite poor and a bit tackless. When we eventually got the key to our room we had to literally dump our bags and go which gave us no time to enjoy the extras. However the hotel did provide an ice bucket and ice for us to enjoy the champagne later.

On the second day we stayed our key was also locked and stopped working in the morning which we had to see reception about. This was cleared up very quickly but an inconvenience we could have done without.

Overall the hotel was lovely but out of choice I'd definately choose to stay at the St Paul's Hotel. The staff appeared more organised. Then again my experience wasn't bad enough to make me never stay in this hotel again, as all the facilities and room was lovely.

“Good hotel, excellent location but not 5*.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I booked this via a deal on lastminute.com. It stated a 5 star hotel however I fail to see that this hotel is 5*, possible more a 4*. That said, the location was excellent. Unlike previous reviewers, I also arrived early and was told to come back after 2 pm. They advertise "female friendly" wing however as a lone female, no mention of this was made to me and I was given a room on the 8th floor. No view but this was not surprising given the cost of the room. Avoid breakfast if it isn't part of your package - the cost of £23 is extremely excessive given that there is a Wetherspoons just along the road which gives very similar fayre for £5. Reception staff were polite but not over-welcoming. Agree with other reviewers that staff are mostly non-English native speakers and when I requested grapefruit segments at breakfast I was given a whole, unpeeled grapefruit. I was also served my cooked breakfast before I had finished my cereal. The room was comfortable and clean, but the bathroom was a little bit dated with no separate shower (unlike other 4* hotels in the area). I put my towels up rather than have them changed every day however they were changed anyway! Also, I had on both days my facecloth taken away and not replaced. Would I stay here again? Only if I got a cheap deal. Having stayed at the Apex City of London Hotel which is a 4* hotel, this hotel doesn't come close.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter especially if you back onto the railway line.

“Good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We have stayed here a few times now, the most recent being new years eve, this time we stayed in a suite on the 12th floor all very nice and fantastic views over the tower of London and tower bridge from our room but had to complain 4 times, heating did not work, over charged at checking out, room service was wrong and had to argue with the restaurant manger over the breakfast when the waitress made a sceen over full english.

This is a nice hotel but as other people has stated is looking a bit tired our carpet was lifting, wall paper ripped, no heating (even after maintenance spent 30 minutes). but as central London hotels go this is excellent value for money if you can get a deal which is normally easy at weekends if you book in advance.

If you are looking for good value but good quality and can plan in advance then I would recommend this hotel every time.

Room Tip: look for the deals
