I paid for a private room as I was in London volunteering for Crisis and needed a quiet night to sleep. I was put in a room in the basement. The smell in the corridors was like a hospital at dinner time, revolting, and the air was thick with damp. The room itself was like a prison cell between the toilets, showers and kitchen. Stained lino floor, a dirty broken blind and the most basic of fixtures and fittings. Lots of noise from the extractor fans in the toilets and showers. I've stayed in hostels all over the world and this was the least welcoming and most dirty. I immediately asked for a different room and the receptionist was very accomodating and I was moved to a garden room. This was like a shed with a glass front. I couldn't open any window and as people were smoking right outside the door and it was dark I had to close the filthy curtains for privacy. It was damp (see the photo of the ceiling!) and the floor was disgusting. The damp had also destroyed the fire safety information. The 'ensuite' was a very claustrophobic cupboard. I had to sit on the toilet sideways as there was not room to use it properly. The sanitary waste bin was overflowing and unpleasant. I didn't want to stay and was in fact in tears at the thought, but rang around other hotels in the area and they were too expensive on top of the £61 I'd already paid for this dump. The only positive was that the sheets were clean, so I keep my shoes on until I got into bed. The reception areas were no better. In desperation to get out of my room I went out and tried to use the loo in the main hallway. It had no lock - just a hole in the door, the tap was constantly running, the light didn't work and the seat was faulty. In the end I packed up by 7.30am and was gone. I had to cancel my second day's volunteering in London as I couldn't find anywhere else to stay. DISGUSTING. Very disappointed as I normally expect so much more from YHA and HI after many good experiences worldwide.
